Heartwarming / Only Murders in the Building

Go To

    Season 1
  • Mabel letting Oliver stay in her apartment after he is evicted from his own. This shows how much she cares for her friends despite her snarky attitude towards them at times.
  • Charles encouraging Oliver to not sell the poster for his show and telling him that people like him (Oliver) brings others out of their comfort zone and brings out the best in people, using an admittedly strange example of him to show the point.
  • Oliver and Charles standing up for Mabel when her mom is worried for her by saying all the good things about her.
  • During the season finale, Mabel finds concrete evidence of Jan being the true culprit. Upon seeing her distress, Oliver somberly says "I'm so, so, sorry". Even more poignant is that he doesn't ruin the moment with a comedic comment or a line that makes it all about himself. Oliver is simply trying to comfort his friend with no ulterior motive.

    Season 2
  • Charles reconnecting with Lucy, his not-quite-stepdaughter. It turns out that his text to her in Season One turned to them renewing contact and talking to each other regularly, and Charles repeatedly tries to dissuade her from getting involved in solving Bunny's murder because he wants to protect her from any danger.
  • After Oliver's woeful declaration that he can no longer enjoy tzatziki or any other delicious Greek dip, Charles suggests "the wonderful world of South American salsas". Oliver dismisses it, but a couple of scenes later, they're deep in conversation about things like mangoes in salsa as Oliver is both enjoying himself and successfully distracted from the e-mail he's dreading.
  • Mabel and her father were shown to have a close bond with each other when the former was a child, as they spend their time together playing with puzzles and watching The X-Files.
  • Detective Williams, while talking to Charles and Oliver about the evidence they've found, has a hard time calming her fussy baby. Oliver picks him up and shows her a trick he used to do with Will: laying the baby down, then lifting and moving around his legs (while singing "One" from A Chorus Line), until he's able to pass gas and calm down. It works perfectly, showing that despite his eccentricities (and doubts over the DNA test) Oliver is an excellent father.
  • After seeing Mabel stab Glitter Guy, Theo, seeing she was in shock, took her back to his place to recover, and let her crash there. When he realizes she can't even remember what she did or how she got there, he tells her, and also makes sure to tell her that Glitter Guy attacked her first, a detail all the internet coverage is leaving out.
  • While Mabel and Theo go to Coney Island to find the matchbook, they spend an hour playing whack-a-mole and with the claw while they wait for Theo's tracker to charge. They also connect with each other in the car, with Mabel suggesting that Theo shouldn't shut out the people who care about him. This convinces Theo to Facetime with Teddy, who he was in an argument with two episodes prior and whose calls he had been ignoring.
  • Mabel doesn't know ASL, which makes communicating with Theo tricky. After their day together, she thanks him... trying to use ASL. Her attempt is clumsy and she gets some signs wrong, but he understands what she means and laughs good-naturedly at her fumbling.
  • At the end of "Flipping the Pieces" Charles, Oliver, and Mabel rush into a group hug and hold tight. This is a marked change as Charles and Oliver don't particularly like each other and Mabel keeps everyone at arm's length. But after another day of worrying about each other's safety, it shows that the three really are friends.
  • Nina's interactions with Lester, the doorman, in "Hello Darkness": Despite her cold exterior, she is properly grateful to him for helping set up her baby swing and even apologizes for her earlier dismissiveness towards his job.
  • During the blackout, the whole building ends up singing "The Sound of Silence" together, which helps calm down Nina's baby and lulls her back to sleep.
  • Oliver struggles with whether or not he should confess to Will about his son's true parentage, but Will reveals that he figure out the truth and that Oliver is his father in every way that matters.

    Season 3
  • After seeing how bad things could be with Matthew Broderick, Oliver instantly tells Charles that all is forgiven and throws his arms around him.
  • In "CoBro" Theo and Mabel are shown to have become friends since they bonded in Season 2, with him showing up to help her move out of her aunt's place and accompanying her to an auction at Ben's place. It's also revealed that she's been learning ASL to communicate with him, and they banter playfully about Theo's love of the CoBro movies.
  • After a whole season of being completely unable to learn his song for the show, Charles nails it in "Sitzprobe." What makes it heartwarming is that the entire cast, along with Detective Williams, is watching Charles intently, and are clearly enraptured by his performance, and everyone's thrilled for him when he finally gets it right after so much work.
  • In "Thirty", Mabel casually reveals that she is celebrating her 30th birthday and says there is no way she would rather spend it than solving a murder with Charles and Oliver.
  • In "Thirty", Mabel and Charles are shown sitting guard over Oliver's bedside after his heart attack. Oliver also references Charles screaming at him not to die.
  • In the season 3 finale, Loretta tries to tell Dickie that she's his mother, only for him to tearfully admit he's suspected it for a while. They embrace, and at the end of the season Loretta finally has everything she's dreamed of and worked for: a chance at success, and to build a life with her son.
    • Oliver's reaction also shows his personal growth. When Loretta had the opportunity to move to LA and build her career earlier in the season, he coldly invoked her contract to stop her from leaving (although he did relent at the end of the episode). In the finale he gently pushes her to pursue her dreams alongside Dickie, even if it means she has to leave New York.
