Heartwarming / Johanna Mason: They Will Never See Me Cry

Go To

  • Johanna's description of her happy childhood and how her parents treated her like a "woodland princess" while her uncle made sure she had skills that would help her if she ever got reaped.
  • New District 7 escort Lalaney gets a nice Establishing Character Moment where she climbs into the Masons' tree house to talk to Johanna.
  • Johanna performing funeral rites in the 71st Hunger Games arena for both District 4 tributes.
  • Finnick gives Johanna a pre-Games picture of her ally and crush Red during the Victory Tour so she will have something to remember him by that isn't tainted by the Hunger Games.
  • All of Johanna and Finnick's moments of providing each other with emotional support.
  • Elderly District 7 Victor Egor hanging out with Johanna's mother and brother provides some sweet scenes, as they both like him, and Johanna's Broken Bird mother in particular needs a friend and source of emotional support.
  • During the 73rd Hunger Games, Lyme tells Johanna that not everyone from District 2 is like Brutus after Johanna and Brutus have an altercation, and then hears Johanna out as she proposes a plan to keep everyone's tributes from being ambushed by Titan, the ruthless renegade tribute from District 1 (who killed one of the District 7 tributes), the next time they send supplies to their tributes.
  • After Johanna's plan to confuse Titan leads to his death, at first she is solemn, noting that his death doesn't bring back the tributes he killed and almost makes it as if they died for nothing. Then she sees an injured girl from District 4 getting medicine because Titan isn't around to attack her, and reminds herself that buying that girl and the others at least a few more days of life means something.
  • Byte winning the 73rd Hunger Games without a single kill due to a Victory by Endurance gives those Games a bittersweet feel leaning a bit more on the sweet side, especially due to him being a Morality Pet to Johanna throughout the subsequent year.
  • After Johanna recognizes Merade (Foxface) as a strategic tribute right from the reaping, her tribute Hetty says that if anyone can recognize strategy, it is her. Johanna feels touched to realize that even if she isn't loved back in her hometown, she is respected.
  • Plutarch telling Johanna that her uncle was murdered for being a rebel and not to punish her is somewhat pragmatic (as he's trying to recruit her for rebel schemes at the time). Still, he says it kindly, and it it is moving to watch those words alleviate some of the It's All My Fault guilt Johanna carries with her.
  • As Johanna watches Hetty and Hemlock's families collect their bodies after the 74th Hunger Games, she makes the District 12 three-fingered salute, something that the families seem moved by, with Hetty’s twin sister becoming friends with Johanna in the months afterward.
  • When Johanna returns from the Capitol after the 74th Hunger Games, her family isn't waiting at the train station, leaving her terrified that Snow killed them. It turns out that Honorary Uncle Egor just forgot to tell them to meet her. She embraces them in a relieved and joyful hug, and after years of being a distant vegetable, Johanna's mother returns the hug.
  • Punch-Clock Villain Peacekeper Iberio defies orders and tries to get Johanna's brother Joey to safety after another Peacekeeper injures him, which also kickstarts some chemistry between Johanna and Iberio.
  • Croft's granddaughter idolizes Johanna in a way that makes her be a little nicer to the family than she wants to be (due to viewing the parents as Dirty Cowards).
  • When two lumberjacks have to Run for the Border after killing a rapist Peacekeeper, Johanna and several other lumberjacks give the pair some food and a warm coat and then all point in different directions when another Peacekeeper asks which way the fugitives fled.
  • After Annie is reaped (and just before Mags volunteers), one of District 4's other Victors, Drake, is shown patting a distraught Finnick on the back.
  • It's also a sad moment, but shortly before the 3rd Quarter Quell starts, Beetee asks Johanna to ignore her instructions to protect him and Wiress due to doubting that she will be able to and not wanting his friend to get killed trying to help them.
