Headscratchers / Yu-Gi-Oh! SEVENS

Go To

  • Why is there no setting to switch between Master Duel and Rush Duels? Did Yuga intentionally want to ruin the experience of those who actually like master duels?
    • It’s pretty clear that no-one really enjoyed the old format anymore except for the heads of Goha, all of whom are your standard old farts who hate change.
    • Also, while no Master Duel has taken place onscreen yet, it's pretty much implied Goha's citizens can still play them as usual, what with Nail's plan to kill Rush Duels by simply making people lose interest after Yuga's ban instead of keeping trying to find a way to uninstall them.
    • With how many duelist antagonists don't like them, you'd think they'd make Yuga duel in a Master Duel to make it easy to crush him. Play with a deck that works well in Masters (...aka not a deck like you see anyone use), beat him like you're Nail with a new summoning mechanic, tell him he made Rush Duels because he and everyone else just aren't good duelists who build bad decks, bam. Simple as that. Then maybe give them some Monster Reborns and Pot of Greeds.
      • Maybe they’re so old that they don’t understand how to switch between Rush and Master mode?
      • It’s not that simple. Goha wants to crush Rush Duels to the point that no one would use that format ever again. Defeating Yuga in a Master Duel wouldn’t accomplish that task and may instead inspire others to continue with Rush Duels. The only way to completely stomp them out is to defeat Yuga at his own game, showing off Goha’s superiority. As the old saying goes, fight fire with fire.
  • Why don't the duelists in the Maximum Arc duel without their Duel Disks (as in on the floor like how irl duelists do it)? are they so interested with seeing their monsters come to life that they are willing to risk a penalty?
    • Maybe dueling without Duel Disk is illegal in Goha City? It's possible since even trading cards without Goha Corp's supervision is illegal. Jossed in Episode 27 when Luke plays a manual duel against himself.
  • Would it really be that bad to have your Goha Account deleted? Sure, you probably won't be able to become a Master Duelist anymore, but there must be career options in Goha City that don't require the ability to duel.
    • It's still one of the most popular games around, and without the duel disks it lacks a certain 'bang bang'.
    • You usually get a penalty when you violate the rules, and even if you did, you can still cancel the deed within the time limit to avoid a penalty. With these conditions, get a penalty(ies) or banned from dueling in Goha City can be quite a stigma, even if you are not a duelist anymore.
  • Will a Master Duel actually occur on screen in series at some point?
  • How the hell did Asana get a Maximum Monster?! The only people that should even have access to those types of cards are people that could edit official Goha cards (Nail is/was the duel overseer and Yuga used his friends duel disks to create his cards), and I honestly don’t think that the Mutsuba family would have legal access to that, nor do I think they would do anything illegal that could damage their reputation.
    • Gakuto commented on that and even mentioned Nail, so this will presumably get an explanation in a future episode.
    • The end of the episode implies Asana is in cahoots with Goha Corp despite seemingly having a grudge against them. They probably still have the data and resources needed to make more Maximum Cards - even if they have to go through Nail to get them.
  • Speaking of Episode 32, how does Luke know that Asana uses Wyrm monsters instead of Dragon monster if he can’t tell the difference between them? Surely if there was nothing saying it was a Wyrm in the name, he would have mistaken her monsters for Dragons since they don’t have any discernible difference.
    • Perhaps it's a matter of instinct for him since it's about dragons and he can just not put it into words?
      • They literally have “dragon” in the names of some of them. Also, how can you tell the type of a hologram of a virtual monster simply by looking at it?
      • Well, having dragon in the name isn't necessarily going to mean that they absolutely must be of that type. Luke probably is aware of that much. As to how he can tell that they are Wyrms: I don't know that really but there is apparently something about them that he can identify without him even really knowing what it is.
      • Then why even have “Dragon” in the name instead of something like “Wyrm” or “Ampithere?!” For god’s sake, they could have at least done “lung dragon” since that falls under the Wyrm category. Speaking of, her monsters don’t even look like the typical portrayal of a Wyrm (long slender body being the unifying trait) and are closer to drakes than Wyrms!
    • Luke is an experienced Duelist, he may seen those Wyrm monsters from another Duelists before.
  • Also, what exactly does making Yuga and Co. attend Goha 6th Elementary accomplish for the Heavy Cavalry Duel Club? Most of Yuga's activities related to Rush Dueling are done outside of class, and Asana can't enforce her rules outside of Goha 6th anyways. Moreover, being at a new school just gives Yuga the opportunity to popularize the Rush Duel format to another part of the target demographic, meaning that they are further from their goal of crushing Rush Duels simply by having them there.
  • Why do people add links to the general recaps page without making sure that there are recaps to go to? It just adds a bunch of red to the page.
  • How do the Maximum Cards come out the way they do? Do they react to the duelist's thoughts when they are created or....what. Do Nail and Asuna simply have Yu-tagonist or rival levels of card manipulation powers that let them unconsciously do that alongside Yuga who is, well, a Yu-tagonist and probably created that third Seven Roads card if Otes was to be believed...
    • They probably develop the code for the Maximum Monster first, get cards that can have the monster on it(such as ID cards), and then use real time duel programming to implement the code via the cards.
  • Has anyone considered the transliteration of “Shovel” for Kayama’s given name?
  • How has no one figured out that there was a drone controlling the president before In-Universe? There has to have been some sort of significant height variation between hosts, or else Mimi wouldn’t have been accepted. They also wouldn’t have the exact same proportions or ability to move, meaning that people would see the president in varying states of movement. Assuming that the drone has been “assisting” people since Goha City’s creation, that would make the persona of President Goha at least a dozen decades old, and Goha 66 are at retirement age at about half that! In short, there is no way in hell people would think that it’s been the same person behind the wheel all these years.
    • They probably know that the person behind the tile changes, but likely they assume that it's because of backstabbing at higher levels (consider how the Tops of Hexagon were basically punished for being too weak to get rid of Nail), and the same outfit is likely considered a mix of trying to look intimidating and protecting their real identity to avoid being upstaged in the same way. They likely know it's not the same person, but not about the drone (they also likely avoid bringing up the question or questioning the age of the current president considering better to stay out of the way of someone who managed to become president unless they feel confident enough to try and take their place).
      • Then how come none of the previous presidents attempted to warn people about the MIND-CONTROLLING HELMET USING THEM AS A MOUTHPIECE?! As we see with Mimi’s interactions with the helmet, it’s not on the wielder all the time, and once they figure out that the helmet can just take control of their body at any time, there is no way they would trust it, so it would be relatively easy for someone to have both the means and the motive to either warn people about the drone or to conduct a plan to sabotage the drone.
      • Goha is a powerful company. It’s likely the previous presidents were either made to keep the drone a secret, had their memories erased, or were disposed of.
      • Mimi wasn’t told anything of the sort on screen, nor did she ever complain about not being able to tell anyone. And she clearly remembers her time as president, considering that she was the one to clean out her presidental office, which knocks out the possibility of being disposed of lethally to make way for the new president. Speaking of presidents, how come the 10-year old Goha Siblings are acting as president instead of an older relative that would have actual job experience and have gone through college? Someone had to have made them, so why aren’t they or one of their siblings or cousins taking up the mantle of president?
      • It could’ve happened offscreen or it’s likely if she did try and expose the drone, something might happen to her or her son. The siblings are president because this is an anime, where practically anything can happen, instead of reality.
      • What about the previous presidents who didn’t have such attachments and could have someone else operate to undermine the drone? Also, the reasoning of “because this is an anime” seems a little Doylist for this argument, don’t you think?
      • There’s no way to know for sure since we know absolutely NOTHING about the previous presidents. And since you’re trying to apply real world logic to a show about card games deciding the fate of the world, I’d say my response fit.
      • But this iteration of Yugioh isn’t about saving the world. It’s about a group of kids trying to expand a new format of dueling and keep it from being taken away by a corporation that wants nothing more than to control everything. That is literally one of the most grounded premises in all of Yugioh. And from what we know about most Goha employees, they were ambitious and willing to stab others in the back to get to the top, so it would make sense from a character perspective for someone to try and stab the drone in the back at the first opportunity.
      • I’m talking the about franchise, not SEVENS in particular. And no matter how grounded the premise is, the fact that there are trap holes set up throughout the whole city SEVENS takes place in, characters no older than eleven operating construction equipment, and that there’s a sentient massage chair that can turn into a robot, trying to apply real world logic to a series like this is just pointless. Also, only the Tops of Hexagon, other than Mimi, and Goha 66, who were nearing retirement, had attempted that. The same can’t be said for the other employees. Plus, since the Drone was working for Yuo, it’s doubtful that even if someone had tried to overthrow it, the drone would likely be prepared for such an attempt on its host.
      • Goha built the entire city so they probably viewed trap holes as an effective way to catch criminals, the construction equipment in question is small enough to be treated as vehicular transport more often than actual construction equipment, and sentient electronics are everywhere, so having a massage chair robot isn’t too far out of the question. Also, who else but an extremely ambitious person would even take the job of president. And there is no way either Yuo or the Drone could foresee every method of subterfuge, much less develop a reliable counter, and people would know that.
      • Both Goha AND Asana’s family had built the city. The traps holes are Nail’s PERSONAL design as they all lead to his garden, so it’s highly unlikely he made them just to catch criminals, which would be very impractical. The construction equipment Asana and her team use are STILL used for construction work. Drones are one thing, but a sentient massage chair is a whole other level, even by Yu-Gi-Oh standards. Going by how Mimi became president, it’s more plausible that the drone determines who becomes president after its prior history body has nearly reached their limit. Since the drone can take over it’s host and Yuo has been manipulating events so that he could be the sole president, that’s highly unlikely. Overthinking on this and going off if how YOU think it would happen doesn’t mean that’s going to be the case.
      • Considering that Nail crashed satellites into the city at one point, the trap holes could have been suggested by Nail to be added to the repair plans of the city for the purpose of crime control while having ulterior motives for their actual use. Considering the fact that robots replacing people for certain jobs is a plot point of one of the earlier episodes, it wouldn’t be a stretch for robot massage chairs to replace professional masseuses, the humanoid form being used for extra dexterity. And the president offers the position to someone, meaning that they could refuse if they aren’t particularly ambitious, and I doubt that Yuo can anticipate everything that a Goha employee would do for power.
      • Everything you’ve said is based solely on what YOU personally think would happen, not off if what’s been shown in the series. There’s nothing about Nail’s trap holes being used to capture criminals, which again would be impractical. Nothing about sentient massage chairs replacing professional masseuse’s, especially since Sebastian seems to be one of a kind. And there’s certainly nothing about how anyone in Goha would try and ambush the current president just to take over. Mimi was the only named employee who was ambitious about being president, but never resorted to any of that and was made president because the drone said she had the qualifications to be its next host, nor would Yuo not have anything in place to ensure he would remain president. Also, this page is for tropers to ask questions regarding the series, not to speculate what might or should happen, nor is this the place to debate headcanons.
  • Who changed every mention of Nail to "Neiru?" And why would they do that?
    • Neiru is a valid, if very literal, transliteration of the character's name. Nail is also valid, though a lot of subs go with Neil. It's a decent compromise, but it's ultimately up to personal preference.
      • Konami have now confirmed the spelling as “Nail”. I’m editing as many pages as possible to acknowledge this fact, thought I might need some help.
  • How the heck was the fusion card capable of being used in Rush Duels when nobody even programmed it into the format? With Maximum, there’s at least the backstory of Nail using Real-Time Duel Programming to implement the feature. Fusion, on the other hand, was capable of being used without so much as a draw. They didn’t even have to hack into anything; they just had to see if it was usable in Rush Duels, which it was! Makes one wonder if Yuga knows more about this than he’s letting on…
    • According to Nail the fusion card itself is the program for Fusion Summoning, so it doesn't need to be specifically programmed into the format to work.
    • So where do the Fusion Monsters come from? Did they get created from blank cards like the Maximum, are they created by magic when you decide to put two cards and Fusion in play?
      • In-universe, Fusion card temporarily fused the fusion material monsters together, Fusion Monster come from the fused monsters via the Fusion card.
      • So the Fusion card generates the Fusion Monsters? Do they stay around after the duel to look at? What is keeping them from fusing any random card combo together (like Palm Sized Drago + Miragias or Wolfram + Bolcondor?)
  • Is Tiger actually that much more mature than Luke? Sure, he may have to ask his mom where the spare underwear is, but it’s not all too uncommon to lose a pair of underwear from time to time or forget where you put it. Not to mention he also seems capable of making a serviceable curry, stitching together plushies, and has a similar degree of agency to Tiger. In addition, Tiger is willing to yell at the top of her lungs at someone for not calling her “Tiger,” even if it’s just a respectful title like president and even if her voice is loud enough to seriously injure someone. She also seems to jump to conclusions, considering that she didn’t just ask why Asana left her when looking for Luke instead of hating Asana for years after the fact and not saying a thing. She also solves a variety of family problems by violence and intimidation instead of peace, so her calling Luke immature just rings a little hollow.
    • Siblings don't always say the most intelligent and true things to each other. Maturity is also rather subjective. Plus the family is just weird in general and in a comical show. So how one measures maturity is different. For a cross series example, Monkey D. Garp is more mature than Monkey D. Luffy, but Garp still is....well Garp and is probably the least mature person in the room in as many situations as he isn't the least mature.
    • Being skillful at something isn't equal to being mature and independent (which you need to be especially if you want to separate from your family), however, I see your point. Luke may also have better anger management than Tiger. If someone angers him, he will just outright refuse to talk with them more (like what he did to Romin after the first arc and kids from sports clubs in Episode 27), but if someone angers Tiger? She will yell at them in full voice.
      • It’s not just the fact that he has skills. It’s the fact that he has practical skills that he could use to take care of himself, such as making sure he can cook food for himself and repair any torn fabric of his clothing. He might also be able to sell the plushies as a source of income!
