• Why did nobody call Child Protective Services on the Lisbons? Especially the neighbors- who knew what was happening, as well as the girls' teachers- who were mandated reporters?
  • The story takes place in the 1970s. CPS wasn't a nationwide thing until 1974, mandatory reporting was initially only required of doctors and medical staff, and for many years, even mandatory reporters were only required to report physical abuse. Emotional abuse simply wasn't considered.
