Headscratchers / Supergirl (2015) S3E3 "Far From the Tree"

  • If M'yrnn J'onzz has been imprisoned for over two centuries, how does he know about Krypton's destruction? Did the White Martians keep him updated about current events?
    • Kara told him.
Kara: I come from a dead planet. I come from a dead people, just like you.
    • Kara requested M'yrnn to open up his mind and allowed him to read hers. It can be assumed that M'yrnn did scanned Kara's mind to confirm she's telling him the truth.
    • Which raises the question: How can he read her mind? Remember this line?
J'onn: Kryptonians are immune to my telepathy, which Superman finds hilarious.
    • So, is that immunity something Kryptonians can turn off? And if it is, how would Kara know how to do it?
      • Kara doesn't ask him to read her mind, she asks him to confirm she isn't a White Martian. He recognizes her as a Kryptonian, but that's the limit of what he does.
    • Which raises the second question: if Kara's immune to Martian telepathy how did she see the memory M'yrnn and J'onn shared between themselves?
      • My guess: terrible acting. Benoist completely forgot she was not part of this moment, and by the time the producers realized it, it was too late to remove it.
      • No, that doesn't make sense at all. Episodes are edited before they air, so if such a large mistake as a closeup and a line from her that wasn't in the script happened, it would have at least been caught by then. Also, they focus on her while she says the lines indicating she can see it and J'onn reacted to her comments. So it was rehearsed and was in the script.
      • Actually it makes perfect sense. Actors improvise all the time. Sometimes writers think it's all right and leave it in, without realizing thier mistake later on. J'onn reacting to her does not prove it was scripted. That is just reactionary, period. And if this was part of the script, then that's even worse. It makes no sense that Kara can see them because she is not psychically linked with them. Also Kryptonian minds cannot be telepathically interacted with by Martians and Kara did not have this memory. Anyway, whether it was intentional or not this qualifies as an Epic Fail.
  • Seems a bit convenient that we've heard on our Earth, exactly what this episode says about what some people think of Mexicans... On this alternate Earth, could it be some renegade faction or ideology that is pushing for the building of this wall? Being a secret alien herself, President Marsdin would probably be more open-minded about foreigners that she would not initiate such a thing herself. It seems like a case of Author Filibuster if this isn't the case.
    • It was previously implied that the speaker of the house in this universe is Donald Trump, or at least a stand-in for him. Given that "Build the Wall!" was one of his rallying cries (along with the...other stuff he's said about Mexicans that Maggie's father himself mentioned in his rant), he may have used some political sway to push the project through. Or Maggie's dad was exaggerating and the Republicans of Earth-38 are simply attempting to force Marsdin to approve of it, and he is so jaded that he thinks she will cave to them.
  • Why do Martians refer to the sons of H'ronmeer by the human names Phobos and Deimos? Shouldn't they either have Martian names or, if some Translation Convention is in effect, shouldn't their father be Ares?
    • Maybe it's a coincidence. After all, the Martians have given names that sound close to Jon, Megan, Myron, Kim, and Tanya, so maybe "Phobos" is really F'ohboz and Deimos is really D'yhmos, or something to that affect.
