Moriarty's goal in smashing London's gnomes

• As far as his origin story goes, we don't get much of why he does.
  • According to Gary Dunn, the character designer of the film, an early concept of Moriarty was supposed to have him as an indoor figure, and thus, his animosity towards the gnomes was based towards that fact. Based off that, maybe he was jealous of there being so many other ornaments out there, and he wanted to be the only one in London so he could be loved and/or respected.
