Headscratchers / Emily in Paris

• The biggest of the series: Why would a supposedly top-notch agency send, on an important job for this company, to France someone who can't even speak the language?
  • The thin in-story explanation is that her boss, who was originally supposed to go, could speak French (or at least had a Master's in it, so even if she wasn't currently fluent she could get by). Her abrupt pregnancy had them settle for Emily as a last-minute replacement, as she could (on paper) do everything on the advertising side.

• Why bother writing that Emily can't speak French when everyone in Paris apparently speaks perfect English anyways?
  • Most people in Europe learn to speak English. The reason Emily not being able to speak French is a big deal is because she came to a foreign country and didn’t bother to learn their language, expecting to be able to coast by on the assumption that everyone spoke English or she could use google translate to communicate. It was a matter of arrogance and a lack of respect that she showed to the people she is now working with and to the country as a whole.

• Why would a furniture company be named "the horse"? It has nothing to do with horses.
  • That's common. There's a Swedish bed company named "The Horse's" (in Swedish). There's a beer brand called Kirin, even though that mythological creature is unrelated to beer. Apples have nothing to do with music or with computers, but companies making those things are still named Apple. People like horses, so the name "The Horse" gives reasonably pleasant connotations.
