  • Where do new Shadow People come from? Turning a traveler into a Shadow Person causes the first Shadow Person to leave the dream world, so it would seem like there can only be a set number of Shadow People in the dream at a time, as long as they're not killed by light, eaten by a Bottom Feeder, or consumed by the Dark Church.
    • Possibly, anyone who dies in the Deep Sleep (or deeper levels) will become a Shadow Person—for example, a person in a coma whose body died would have nowhere to return to. They might have no choice but to become a Shadow Person.
    • scriptwelder's Don't Escape: 4 Days in a Wasteland links the Deep Sleep trilogy to that series with two cameos of Shadow People, and also provides a possible explanation of how they are created. Cate states one of the possibilities of using the hibernation pods without the proper software floppies needed is that they could get stuck in a limbo dreamscape.
