Hate Sink / The Walking Dead (2010)

Go To

While some villains are too badass/awesome to truly hate, others you can't wait to see become zombie food.

  • Ed Peletier is a wife-beater who makes no attempt to help out around camp and is implied to lust after his own daughter. Naturally, no one gives a crap when he becomes one of the first casualties of the series during the fish fry massacre.
  • Mitch Dolgen. He calls Tara a "little bitch" in front of his group and quickly becomes the Governor's lackey even after he murders his brother. He uses his tank to destroy the prison, forcing Rick's group to abandon their home for the last season and a half. No tears were shed when Daryl put an arrow in his chest despite Mitch trying to surrender.
  • Father Gabriel Stokes in Season 5. Despite his pleasantness, his selfish and cowardly attitude render him unlikable for the most part. Thankfully, he improved big time.
  • Nicholas is a Dirty Coward who, along with Aiden, abandoned multiple people to die on supply runs and later causes Noah's gruesome death while trying to save his own ass. He also tries to kill Glenn when he puts him in his place. However, after Glenn beats some sense into him, Nicholas finally realizes he isn't as badass as he thinks he is and becomes a much better person and a team player.
  • Pete Anderson is an abusive husband and father who murders Reg Monroe with Michonne's katana.
  • Pete's son Ron grows into one in Season 6, having a petty grudge against Rick and Carl for his father's death and his girlfriend leaving him, respectively.
  • Downplayed with Spencer Monroe. After he Took a Level in Jerkass in Season 7, he's grown pretty unlikable, complaining about how Rick failed to kill the Saviors even though he's never done much for his own safe zone, and ultimately plotting to usurp Rick. However, his sympathetic death and motivations, and generally being a small fry next to Negan, mean he’s far from the worst Hate Sink on the show.
  • Gregory the sleazy Hilltop leader is deep in here being both a Dirty Old Man and incompetent leader who gave bad info on Negan when he sent the group to kill him and sycophants the Saviors while attempting to sell out guests who oppose them. Xander Berkeley's over-the-top performance does make him slightly more tolerable than his comic counterpart, however.
  • Jared is a member of Gavin's team, being an arrogant and violent jackass who shows no redeeming qualities, kills Benjamin despite being ordered to kill Richard, and only receives minor punishments for his behavior and actions. After two seasons of Jared being a sadistic Smug Snake, seeing Morgan kick him into a room full of walkers and lock the gate while he pleads for his life as he is devoured is incredibly cathartic.
  • David is a perverted Savior who displays a creepy interest in Enid and attempts to rape Sasha.
  • Gunther is a creepy Savior who taunts Ezekiel about the loss of his entire militia and attempts to take him as a prize to Negan while cruelly kicking at his injured leg and then attempting to cut his head off to save himself the trouble. Even his actor, Whitmer Thomas, hoped for viewers to hate his character by the time he was bisected by a very pissed off Jerry.
  • In just one episode, Jocelyn establishes herself as one of the most detestable villains in the series. She betrays Michonne (who was her college best friend), kidnaps Judith, tries to kill Michonne when she is pregnant, and is revealed to have turned at least a dozen children into her mindless, unfettered servants.
  • While most of the Reapers are pieces of work, Pope and Carver definitely stand out as the group's most loathsome members. Pope is a psychopathic fundamentalist and Hypocrite who shows no problems sending his own loyal soldiers to die to satisfy his own bloodlust. Carver is a grade-a Jerkass whose only redeeming quality is his love for his fellow Reapers; to everyone else, he's an obnoxious prick who takes every opportunity he can to rile them up and is also revealed to be the one who killed Elijah's sister. Although he does downplay this trope ever so slightly in his last episode by putting up a badass fight against Maggie, Negan, and Elijah all at once.
  • Sebastian Milton is a spoiled, arrogant, entitled, ungrateful little bastard whose main trump card is that he's the son of the Commonwealth's governor Pamela. Unlike the comics, where he only ever killed one person, he's shown to be perfectly fine with sending dozens of people to their deaths to retrieve a surplus of cash, all just so he can keep up his own pampered lifestyle. Uniquely, Sebastian actually realizes he has a chance to defy this trope and do better since he knows the lower class Commonwealth citizens are suffering under the class divide, but doesn’t think anything can be done until Max convinced him otherwise. Yet he proves he’s incapable of change when his recording is leaked and he tries to kill Max for it. Consequently, no one lifts a finger to help him when he's wrestling a walker that then proceeds to tear his throat out. You have to be a real Hate Sink among Hate Sinks to have a chance at redemption and then prove you are unworthy of it.
  • Pamela herself turns out to be far worse than her son. She is revealed to be much of the root of Sebastian’s behavior due to psychologically abusing him to try to force him to be a political leader to continue the Milton dynasty, causing him to act out. She is completely unwilling to allow the lower classes a true chance at improving their lives, right down to picking lottery winners that become glorified PR cows for her. And despite dozens of people being unwilling to help Sebastian before he died, she picks Eugene as her target and declares him public enemy number one who will suffer a Kangaroo Court that she vows will end in his execution. To ensure this happens, she captures the Coalition residents and sentences them to a slave labor camp to be used as hostages to force Yumiko to prosecute Eugene and has no issue if the prisoners die or are executed. She even sends Connie to “Designation 2” out of pettiness, and also is revealed to regularly hold False Flag Operation’s in which walkers are lured to the gates to scare any civilians protesting into dispersing, regularly playing with her citizens’ lives. Finally, not only does she shoot Judith and blame the Coalition for making her do it, but when she learns of the invading horde, she demands she and the elites be protected while using the lower classes to slow down the horde.
