Widely regarded as one of Laurel and Hardy's best, the whole film is a riot of humour.

  • Stan and Ollie flinch when the barkeep first flings a beer down the bar.
  • The deed for Mary Roberts is supposed to be a secret, but Stan...
Mickey: I'm Ms. Roberts' guardian. What do you want to see her about?
Ollie: We have some business to discuss with her.
    Mickey: What's it about?
Ollie: I'm sorry. We're not supposed to discuss it with anyone but her.
Stan: You see it's private - her father died and left her a gold mine and we're not supposed to tell anyone but her, right? (Ollie is flabbergasted) Tell him, Ollie
    Mickey: A gold mine?!
    Stan: It's the biggest-
Ollie: (interrupting) Now that he's taken you into our confidence... (hits Stan)
  • Stan keeping the deed in his shoe, and Ollie's exasperation.
    • Speaking of shoes, Stan attempts to cover the hole he's worn in the sole of his shoe (the deed also has a lovely little hole in it) first by putting his big toe through it, but he sees the flaw in his plan the second he puts his foot down. Ollie makes his opinion clear by pulling on the toe and snapping it back like rubber, then telling Stan to put it on properly.
    • Then a patron complains the meat is 'as tough as shoe leather' so Stan takes a piece to plug up the hole with that.
    • Later, a group of dogs goes after him until Ollie pulls out the meat and tosses it away.
  • Stanley vows if they don't succeed in their task "I'll eat your hat!" When they don't succeed, Ollie makes him stick to his word. Initially whimpering in distaste at the deed, Stanley's lapsed into blank-faced contentment by the third bite of his meal. Ollie snatches his hat back before it's completely gone, but takes a curious bite himself. He pulls a disgusted face and spits it out.
  • Stan's "magic lighter".
  • They first attempt to break into the saloon via pulling Ollie up to the balcony falls short when Stan pauses mid-pull to spit on his hands. Ollie promptly falls back down, then in a little game of tit-for-tat, Ollie first throws Stan for a loop by tugging onto the rope just as he grabs hold, then Stan returns the favor. And then Ollie tries again, Stan quickly releases the rope, making him sprawl from his own strength.
  • "Only four months to Christmas!"
