Funny / The Summer You Were There

Go To

Even a manga as dark and tragic as The Summer You Were There has its share of funny moments.

  • In Chapter 3, Shizuku warns Kaori, who's excited about their library excursion, to be quiet since they're in a library. Two pages later, Shizuku is so shocked that Kaori likes the same author she does that she forgets to stay quiet, causing Kaori to remind her that they'll need to be quiet.
  • In the Volume 2 bonuses, it turns out that Shizuka, who lent Shizuku her yukata and did her hair for the festival date, was a bit too eager about the latter, having a whole list of styles she wanted to try.
  • In Chapter 11, after Kaori's visits to the Hoshikawa house, it turns out that Shizuku's sulking about Kaori not using her first name despite calling Shizuka by hers, with Kaori noting that otherwise, she'd be calling everyone "Hoshikawa-san," thus resulting in Kaori getting Shizuka to call her by her first name.note .
  • In the Volume 3 bonus features, the normally straight-laced Shizuku can't resist the urge to tap a cold soda can against Kaori's cheek. One would think Kaori would go first, but it's actually Shizuku.
  • While most of Shizuku's conversation with Seri in Chapter 18 is tense and/or somber, there's a funny moment near the end when Seri remarks that she's giving Shizuku advice so she can help Kaori because they're in a relationship. Cue shocked and embarrassed reaction from Shizuku.
  • In Chapter 19, Kaori unintentionally fakes out Shizuku when she says that she's in love... with Shizuku's novel. Shizuku, who'd recently heard Seri remark that she and Kaori look like a couple, nearly has a heart attack.
  • Also from Chapter 19, Kaori quickly gets tired climbing what should be an easy mountain to ascend, while her sister Shizuka climbs it without a problem. Her sister then gives her a hard time about having trouble despite being younger, and they argue about whether youth is a factor.
  • In the Volume 4 afterword, Yuama mentions going up the same mountain that Shizuku and Shizuka tried in Chapter 19, despite being as "exercise-deficient" as Shizuku and struggling. After Yuama struggled with the first part of the mountain, some people came down the mountain, remarking about how they'd gotten done with the really steep parts. Cue Oh, Crap! from Yuama.
  • In Chapter 20, after hearing that Kaori has another request, Shizuku braces herself for another mountain climb (since Kaori had expressed interest in a mountain climbing video), clearly terrified at the prospect.
  • Chapter 22: After an emotional rollercoaster of a visit to the Asaka house, during which Shiori confesses how she's afraid of losing Kaori and blames Shizuku for causing Kaori to push herself before reluctantly giving Shizuku the book she wanted, Shizuku calls Kaori, who tell her that Shiori thinks Shizuku is a nice person. Naturally, Shizuku is utterly flabbergasted.
  • In Chapter 28, Kaori compares Shizuku to a jellyfish because of Shizuku's white hair. Shizuku finds the comparison strange but cute at the same time.
  • While Chapter 30 leads into the Darkest Hour of the series, there's a funny moment when Shiori opens the door to Kaori's hospital room, calling out for her, and then has a disappointed/annoyed expression upon seeing Shizuku, bluntly saying, "You're here, too..."
  • Even the emotionally charged final chapter has a funny moment. Shizuku reads Kaori's letter, which goes on for 15 pages, talks about why she loved Shizuku and, includes, among other things, an apology for going on for so long.
Shizuku: (sighs) She wasn't kidding about having a lot to say.
