The book

  • The story of how Triptolemus Yellowley got his name: Mrs. Yellowley dreams of a plough pulled by three yoke of oxen and decides this is a vision of her unborn son's importance. While she's ill after giving birth, she asks her husband to give the baby a name that reflects her idea of his future. This leads to the poor baby being named Triptolemus (after a character in Greek mythology). The narrator finishes this story with:
Mrs. Yellowley was not much delighted with the manner in which her request had been complied with.
  • Cleveland calls his friend Jack Bunce by his real name. Bunce asks to be called by his stage name of Frederick Altamont instead. Cleveland agrees, but snarks about it.
Cleveland: Frederick be it, then, with all my heart, and pray tell me, which of your names will sound best at the head of the Last Speech, Confession, and Dying Words of John Bunce, alias Frederick Altamont, who was this morning hanged at Execution-dock, for the crime of Piracy upon the High Seas?
