In the Book
- In Chapter 4, Tom uses the wealth he accumulated from his whitewashing scam to trade for Sunday school tickets (that he was supposed to earn by memorizing Bible verses). He quickly collects enough tickets to receive a Bible from the teacher; the boys he traded with feel duped. Seeing that Tom apparently memorized two thousand verses, Judge Thatcher asks Tom to tell him the first two of the twelve disciples to be appointed. Tom, of course having no idea, eventually nervously yells out "DAVID AND GOLIATH!"
- Tom and Becky have an argument. She says she never wants to see him again and storms off. Then he says, "Well, see if I care, missy!" and then laments that he hadn't thought of that comeback until it was too late.
- The end-of-year "Examination" for the schoolchildren (chapter 21) starts out normally enough: recitations of speeches and poetry, a spelling bee, and so on. Then the girls start reading their original compositions, stuffed with overly flowery prose and written about subjects that had been done to death by generations of students before them. The narrator's skewering of these works is funny enough in itself, but the grand finale comes when the boys of the class pull a prank on their teacher by using a cat to snatch his wig off—revealing a bald head painted gold while he was drunk and asleep earlier that day.

- On the river sequence, one of the enemy types are birds that the game manual calls "Black Penguins". They are actually blue in color. Also, unlike penguins, they fly.
- This is a book that kids probably are at least familiar with from school, either from any number of adaptations or abridged versions of the booknote . And they were probably wondering if Mark Twain wrote some sequels with giant octopi, haunted houses, and airships that their teachers did not tell them about.
