Tom, in chapter 5, uses the wealth he accumulated from his whitewashing scam to trade for Sunday school tickets (that you're supposed to win by memorizing Bible verses). By accumulating ten yellow tickets through trading, he's able to win his own bible; the boys he traded with feel duped. Seeing that Tom apparently memorized two thousand verses, Judge Thatcher asks Tom to tell him the first two of the twelve disciples to be appointed. Tom, of course having no idea, eventually nervously yells out "DAVID AND GOLIATH!"
Let us draw the curtain of charity over the rest of the scene.
Tom and Becky have an argument. She says she never wants to see him again and storms off. Then he says, "Well, see if I care, missy!" and then laments that he hadn't thought of that comeback until it was too late.
