• In "Old Devlins Was a-Waiting", John has to help out Anderson Newland in dealing with a miserable asshole named Rixon Pengraft. Rixon tells Anderson that "I'm not afraid of you or any member of your family that ever lived!". This leads to the summoning of Anderson's several-times over grandfather, Captain Anderson Hatfield. Devil Anse and John then visit the loudmouthed idiot Rixon in his room, and what follows is a hysterical scene as the arrogant Rixon all but crawls across the floor to beg the big bad rifle-packing ghost of Old Devlins not to kill him.
• "The Spring": John and Zeb are holed up in a cabin for the night as a witch sics monsters on them to try to convince Zeb to give her control of a healing spring. Hearing a scratching at the door, John risks opening it and is immediately face-to-face with a werewolf with slavering jaws and gleaming fangs. His only response is to quip that they don't want whatever it's selling and shut the door again.
