Funny / Return to Monkey Island

Go To

  • Funny since its inception, as Ron Gilbert announced it on April Fools' Day, 2022, to reasonable incredulity. Gilbert did say in 2013 that the then-unlikely 6th game would be announced this way.
  • Whenever Guybrush goes to talk with Carlotta in the governor's mansion, they always pull out swords and start dueling. They aren't even angry with each other, but as great fighters, they just enjoy the practice while they converse about life and needs.
  • Part of getting Carla's trust back is giving her a "forgiveness frog", but it's not enough without knowing more about her from her statue or other dialog. Thus, sometimes you'll get a humorous, "I reject your frog." And despite the oddity, once you have everything, its voodoo magic thus makes her surprisingly compliant.
  • Guybrush is required to find the legendary mop tree to create his own mop handle. Given it has branches literally shaped like mop handles, you'd expect Guybrush to just cut off one branch. Instead, after several hours, Guybrush proceeds to completely obliterate and carve out the entire trunk, somehow destroying not just the tree, but the entire surrounding forest. And to make it funnier, this is coupled with forest animal and critters completely horrified with Ocular Gushers and Guybrush dismissing them as skittish.
  • After Guybrush (in disguise) is hired onto the crew as a swabbie, Gullet (the first swab) goes on a power trip and forbids Guybrush from leaving the hold for any reason whatsoever, not even for food, sleep, or toilet use, mocking and laughing at Guybrush all the way. After Gullet leaves, a frustrated Guybrush, clearly questioning the decisions that led him here, sarcastically sings "Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me" under his breath.
  • When disguised as Gullet, Guybrush can find the actual Gullet himself still stuck to the rudder of the ship. Gullet is puzzled to encounter a doppelganger, and Guybrush can choose to pull his leg by claiming to be his twin. Amusingly, Gullet turns out to indeed have a twin, named Mullet, but since he is his fraternal twin, Gullet is confused as to why "Mullet" all of a sudden looks so much like him. Guybrush quickly makes up the excuse that fraternal twins just happens look more like each other with age, and Gullet instantly buys it wholesale without any further questions, and starts to aloud wonder why his brother has chosen to appear now to mock him in his moment of defeat.
  • Guybrush swaps LeChuck's map to the Secret for his map to the mop tree on Mêlée Island. We later see a confused LeChuck and Iron Rose finding a mop tree on Monkey Island completely identical to the one on Mêlée Island after having followed the map.
  • Murray actually ends up helping Guybrush freely and of his own volition. He is still Murray, though.
Guybrush: I feel like we're entering a new phase in our relationship.
Murray: (making no attempt to hide his sarcasm) I'm trying to contain my joy.
  • Guybrush tries offering the Locksmith a big price for her Golden Key. One of the options he can offer her is giving her his first-born child. Upon picking this option, we briefly cut back to the present:
    Boybrush: WHAT?!
Guybrush: It's just figure of speech.
    (cut back to the story)
Locksmith: I hope you're not serious.
Guybrush: It's just figure of speech.
  • LeChuck's diary is just filled with laughs. From him obsessing over his hatred of Guybrush (Including "Guybrush" being a stupid name someone clearly made up), making lists of things he hates about Guybrush, to him trying out various catchphrases.
  • LeChuck on the verge of finding the secret, hears Guybrush approaching.
LeChuck: GUYBRUSH! I SHOULD'VE KILLED YOU THE 58 TIMES I HAD THE CHANCE.
  • When the crew of LeChuck's ship celebrates going to Monkey Island, they throw their hats and other accessories into the air, including a disguised Guybrush, who gets so caught up in the moment that he tosses up his magic eyepatch...removing the disguise.
