The Outsiders

  • Hylas recalls that when his late dog Scram was a puppy and Issi four years old, he made her laugh by shouting "Scram! Scram!" at the dog who then raced towards them instead of scramming.
  • Hylas at first calls sea urchins "sea-hedgehogs" until Pirra sets him straight. She then asks what hedgehogs are, so he spooks her by lying that they're boar-sized monsters with huge fangs. When he later tells her what hedgehogs really look like, he bursts out laughing at her startled expression.

The Burning Shadow

  • Userref, frustrated that Pirra just tried to escape from the House of the Goddess through the roofs, mentions that she has already made many other escape attempts by trying to bribe a water-carrier, hide in an empty olive jar, and cling to the webbing under a chariot.
  • In order to prevent Yassassara from marrying her off to a Makedonian chieftain, Pirra greeted the emissary while smeared in donkey dung, grinning crazily and showing her hennaed scar.

Eye of the Falcon

  • When Akastos recalls Pirra and calls her Hylas' girl, Hylas flushes and insists they're just friends.
Akastos: You're what, nearly fourteen? You expect me to believe that?
  • The normally confident Hylas is overwhelmed by a lot of things he sees in the House of the Goddess. Upon entering a splendid chamber, he asks if it's the Goddess' residence, only to be told to his shock that it's just Pirra's room. He's also suspicious of using a bath because he thinks it's a coffin.
  • Pirra surprises Hylas by revealing that before leaving the House of the Goddess for good, she stole a bagful of jewelleries.

The Crocodile Tomb

  • Telamon is revealed to have finally made his own boar-tusk helmet, which he thinks makes him a man and a warrior. Meritamen's pet gazelle takes a dumb in it soon after, making Telamon a laughing stock of the Hati-aa's household, including the slaves.
  • Nebetku's embalmer friend Herihor believes that living creatures are unclean and are made perfect through mummification. While preparing Hylas to be smuggled inside the Crocodile Tomb in the coffin of a sacred crocodile, Herihor is more concerned about Hylas tainting the mummified crocodile rather than actually ensuring Hylas won't be dead once he needs to exit the coffin. He gives the boy a vigorous scrubbing and wants to shave him all over until he settles for plaiting Hylas' hair.

Warrior Bronze

  • It's finally revealed how Periphas got his nose broken; he stepped on a hoe that bashed him in the face when he was fifteen years old. It embarrassed him so much that he told his friends that his nose got broken in a fight.
  • It's both sweet and hilarious how Hylas struggles to ask Pirra to be his girl.
