• Charlie's progress reports after he learns about punctuation. Failing to understand what they mean and how to use them, he throws commas and random punctuation marks around haphazardly throughout his text.

• Dr. Strauss gives Charlie a television which he has to keep on at night while he sleeps.
  "That crazy TV kept me up all night! How can I sleep with something yelling crazy things all night in my ears?"
• Charlie attempting to try a simple conversation with Miss Kinnian goes like this:
  " I tried to avoid all discussions of intellectual concepts and to keep the conversation on a simple, everyday level, but she just stared at me blankly and asked me what I meant about the mathematical variance equivalent in Dorbermann's Fifth Concerto."
