• Pure Black Comedy, but what does the first Portia do with the first Fabian, after they work together to take down a bigger enemy, representing perhaps the first instance of cooperation in the history of their species? She mates with him... and then eats him.
  Some instincts are buried deep, and the nanovirus could only do so much.
• How does Holsten distract the Kern satellite long enough to land on the planet? He asks to speak to Eliza. Then he asks to speak to Avrana. Then he asks to speak to Eliza. The computer part can't help but switch personas when asked, giving them enough time to get out of her effective range.
• Holsten gets increasingly grumpy over the course of the novel, because he's always the last one to be woken for the least amount of time. It's been objectively thousands of years, multiple generations have gone on within the ship, and all his friends have gone through decades of hard work. He experiences a couple months or so. It's no wonder he snaps and yells at the shipborn near the end.
