We see that once bitten, people turn into zombies within a couple of minutes. Hope doesn't get bitten, and hours later she still hasn't turned. Then she gets up and walks through a horde of zombies which obviously bite her. And then she turns. Making it pretty clear that just infecting a wound with zombie flesh probably isn't enough.
