Fridge Brilliance

  • Edmund kills his and Mildred's foster parents by poking their eyes out, saving them from further abuse. Mildred lobotomizes the surviving priest with an ice pick through the eye to save Edmund.
  • Edmund and Mildred were sexually abused by their foster parents and Edmund kills them by poking their eyes out with a sharp object. Who else does this? Henry Osgood. It is explained this is a replacement of actual sexual intercourse. On a meta level Edmund wanted to give them back what they've done to them.
    • That may explain why Ratched had a vendetta against McMurphy considering that he was convicted for statutory rape.
  • Ratched suffocates wounded soldiers with a pillow. The same way McMurphy is killed in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

Fridge Logic

  • Interracial marriage was historically illegal until the case of Loving v. Virginia in 1967. It is shown that when a black woman and Filipino man are without a white companion, they are treated with suspicion at a diner, so racism exists in this history. So how is it that Gwendolyn and her husband, who was black and closeted himself, could not only be legally wed to each other, but also have this as a positive in their lives that actually improves their social standings?
    • Not quite. Although Loving v. Virginia did overturn the anti-miscegenation statutes of the state of Virginia as being unconstitutional, about half of the country had already repealed their individual states' anti-miscegenation laws by the 1950s and some states, including most of New England, had never made interracial marriage illegal in the first place. Mixed-race couples were never as rare or unusual as the history books and television made it seem. The improvement in their lives was proving to the world they weren't gay by being married to each other.
