In the video game, the main character's inner voice is manifested as a goldfish that follows him around. This is rather apt, as for the longest time, there was a misconception that goldfish were short-lived creatures that were content to live inside a tiny fish bowl. Just like the goldfish, our miserable protagonist lives in a cooped-up apartment and works at a stifling company. However, there's an upside to this symbolism. It's been recently discovered that despite previous conceptions, goldfish can live much longer than the scant 3-4 years. With proper care, they can live to be 15 years old, or even twice that much. Just as goldfish require adequate conditions to live their best life, the story is about our protagonist realizing he needs to reevaluate his lifestyle in order to improve the quality of his life.
