  • The difference between the standard Type 61 tank and the M61A5 is that the latter was upgunned to twin 155mm guns instead of twin 150mm. Doesn't seem much of a difference, and verifying the weight of HE shells from guns of both calibers from the same era I saw it's not. Then it hit me: 155mm is not a tank gun caliber, it's a field gun-howitzer caliber, and the standard one of NATO (and the Federation seems to have inherited their calibers). The M61A5 was supposed to be self propelled artillery, and was pressed in the field as a MBT due the desperate situation.
    • On the same vein of the above, the Magella Attack was likely a self-propelled artillery vehicle pressed in service as tank when the Magella Eins' production was cut short (possibly because it was too thinly armoured to compete with the Federation tanks, or maybe because the brass decided they had no need for tanks anymore now that they had mobile suits) but the ground forces continued to find situations and places in which sending mobile suits was impossible or impractical but a tank could go just fine.
