We know that people are subject to effects at all times (e.g., losing their hair, headaches when not in light), and the only shadow they're in contact with at all times is their own, therefore their own shadow is the source of the ongoing effects.

- Possible Fridge Horror: Self-preservation. A shadow that eats its host doesn't "survive" as long than if it slowly killed it. This brings up that perhaps the shadows end up "alive" in a sense, perhaps even sentient.
