In the Christmas Episode, when the doctor diagnoses the Santa-John-Doe with amnesia, it seems like the dad's "Let's tell the definition of amnesia, for the kids" is the show trying to hard to enforce the tired excuse that kids need everything explained to them. But then one realizes a rather cute retcon: the dad is actually encouraging the doctor to tell the kids what amnesia is, because he doesn't know what amnesia is. Well played!
There's also another brilliance in the episode's writing. Before learning his new friend has amnesia, when Cory tells Santa-John-Doe he can wait three days for his friend to repay him for the letter (for Santa Cars), the latter wonders "What's in three days?" The obvious answer is Christmas, which becomes a deadline for Cory to jog his new friend's memory. However, we learn that "Santa Cars" (really Benjamin Bell) was traveling to see his family back in Spoiler Valley, which is three days travel from Bumperton Hills. It turns out Cory was right, Benjamin did have a three day deadline, just not for the reasons he suspected.
