• In Spring Pearl: The Last Flower, Doggy tells Spring Pearl that one of his grandmother's many sayings is, "A rabbit's feet may look funny, but it sure can run quick." At the time, Doggy is referring to himself wearing an old pair of shoes that are more comfortable in order to make it easier to run away if he needs to evade trouble, but this saying pretty much defines Spring Pearl: Spring Pearl's feet look funny (within the cultural context) because she didn't undergo foot-binding like most Chinese girls, but she's far more independent and self-sufficient because of it.
