It seems strange that, after going to great lengths to avenge their deaths, Caleb initially acts so coldly towards the revived Gabriella and Ishmael. He's very insistent on dealing with Gideon by himself, to the point where he heads into the alternate world alone against Ophelia's warning that this is exactly what Gideon wants. There's a chance that Caleb's trying to keep his friends and lover out of this conflict so that, if worst comes to worst, he won't have to watch them die again.
