The Refuge (Le Refuge) is a 2010 French drama film directed by François Ozon, starring Isabelle Carre, Louis-Ronan Choisy and Melvil Poupaud.

Mousse (Carré) and Louis (Poupaud) are a couple of junkies. Louis dies from an overdose. Mousse survives and hears that she is pregnant. She decides to keep the baby and to quit drugs. She spends some time in a house by the sea, where Louis's gay brother Paul (Choisy) joins her.


The Refuge provides examples of:

  • Good Girls Avoid Abortion: Louis's mother tries to persuade Mousse to have an abortion, but Mousse decides to keep the baby.
  • Her Heart Will Go On: Mousse's lover dies early in the film. Mousse copes with grief. She is strong enough to quit heroin and to keep the baby when she hears that she is pregnant.
  • The Lost Lenore: Louis, Mousse's lover, dies early in the film. Mousse decides to keep the baby they conceived together.
  • Meaningful Funeral: Louis's funeral. His brother Paul reads a text about him.
  • Obnoxious In-Laws: Louis's mother is quite unpleasant with Mousse. After the funeral, she bluntly asks Mousse to have an abortion, because the family does not want Louis to have a descendant.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: "Mousse" is a nickname. No other name is used to refer to her.
  • The Place: The refuge refers to the house by the sea where Mousse spends her pregnancy.
  • Plot-Triggering Death: The events are triggered by Louis's death.
  • Recovered Addict: Mousse becomes one. She takes methadone to quit heroin.
  • Sibling Triangle: Even if he is gay, Paul has sex with Mousse, his brother's girlfriend.
  • Someone to Remember Him By: After Louis dies, Mousse hears that she is pregnant. She decides to keep the baby.
