Tropes for the film:

  • Disappeared Dad: Kell's father is not in the picture, as her parents are divorced and it is mentioned by her aunt Marie that she warned Le Anne about the man.
  • Domestic Abuse: The movie provides a textbook example of an abusive relationship. Elizabeth's relationship with Mark starts off sweet and innocent before he becomes possessive, controlling, and physically violent towards her. It only gets worse when he threatens to pull a Murder-Suicide after she breaks up with him and gets a restraining order against him.
  • The Film of the Book: Based on Mary Pipher's 1994 novel Reviving Ophelia: Saving the selves of Adolescent Girls.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Elizabeth, while being held at gun point by Mark, calls him out on having a warped idea of love and that if he really wants to prove himself he would put down the gun, which he does and he gets arrested.
