A 1990 Comedy starring Dana Carvey in his first film role. Carvey plays Eddie Farrel, a con artist. In desperate need for money fast, Eddie's partner Lou (played by Todd Graff) decides to rob a house and Eddie is shoehorned into him. After returning to the house to hide from the crime boss Sal Nickels, Eddie is mistaken by the homeowner's (Jonathan's) parents Milt and Mona Albertson as the housesitter who is their son's friend. From there he meets their daughter Annie (played by Julia Campbell) and from there is encouraged by his mentors Max (played by Milo O'Shea) and Connie to start his first love con, only to find himself legitimately falling in love.

This movie provides examples of:

  • Actor Allusion: Eddie and Lou pretend that then-President George H. W. Bush is currently using the restroom. Dana Carvey's most famous impersonation was of the President.

  • Artistic License – Medicine: Annie is issuing flu shots to kids at a medical facility. However, the movie takes place in June and flu shots are done in the winter months.

  • Becoming the Mask: Carvey cons Milt into believing that he's Jonathan's friend, and seduces Annie to get access to Milt's money, but he falls in love with her for real.

  • Celebrity Impersonator: being a con artist played by Carvey, of course Harvey will eventually impersonate the original President Bush.

  • The Charmer: what makes Eddie effective as a con artist, and naturally helps him in the job Milt hires him to do for him.

  • Con Man: what Carvey's character does for a living.

  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Annie is initially cold to Eddie, but eventually warms up to him after going to a nightclub together.

  • Exact Eavesdropping: Eddie and Lou were just about to leave the house when they hear the voicemail Jonathan's friend sends him, letting the duo know that no one will be in the house anytime soon and they can have the run of it.

  • Heel–Face Turn: while he intended to steal from Milt, Eddie not only gave back the money he took from Milt's safe but even returned the signed baseball given to him by Milt.

  • In Love with the Mark: while always attracted to Annie, Eddie didn't intend to fall in love with her...until he did during the con.

  • Mob Debt: Even thro they didn't take the money from the car they ditched, Eddie is forced to repay Sal's money that was stolen from the trunk, with Eddie's partner Lou held as collateral until then.

  • Robbing the Mob Bank: Played with: when Eddie and Lou steal the car, they had no idea that Sal's money was in the trunk. The money is stolen after the duo abandon the car, but they are on the hook for the missing cash.

  • Staged Pedestrian Accident: The movie both begins and ends with Carvey's character performing one.
