Maigret is a 2022 French-Belgian detective film directed by Patrice Leconte and written by Leconte and Jérôme Tonnerre. It is the first film adaptation of the Maigret novel La Jeune Morte (Maigret and the Dead Girl) by Georges Simenon, which was adapted four times for television before between 1959 and 1973. Gérard Depardieu stars as the title role.

In The '50s in Paris, the dead body of an unidentified young woman is found at the Vintimille square in the Ninth Arrondissement. She was wearing a party dress and was killed with five knife strikes. Commissioner Jules Maigret and his men investigate the case to find out who she was and who killed her.

Maigret provides examples of:

  • Blood-Splattered Wedding Dress: Granted it's not a wedding dress, but the effect is similar with the blood-stained white party dress of the dead girl.
  • Chalk Outline: A chalk outline of the position of the dead girl's body is drawn where she was found.
  • The Coroner: The dead girl is brought to one, who then reports the result of the body's examination to Maigret.
  • Dies Wide Open: The dead girl is found with her eyes wide open. Maigret orders his men to close them.
  • Feeling Their Age: Maigret is long past his prime and appears weary most of the time.
  • Iconic Item: Maigret's pipe, as per the books and just like in every previous adaptation.
  • Iconic Outfit: Maigret sports his trademark fedora hat and coat from the books.
  • Identifying the Body: Maigret and his men have to find out who the dead girl is before they go about finding out who killed her.
  • Lead Police Detective: As a police commissioner, Maigret leads his squad in the case of the unidentified dead girl.
  • Must Have Nicotine: After a medical visit at the beginning, the doctor advises Maigret to stop smoking. He doesn't listen.
  • Protagonist Title: "Maigret".
