Good Morning Pakistan (also sold as Salam Pakistan) is a 2018 comedy drama fantasy film by director and writer Hassan Zee. The film explores the story of a Pakistani-American young man named Omar who returns home and is disappointed by the treatment of women in his beloved country. With his friend Happy Heart, a Pakistani transgender woman, Omar aids local women and also uncovers a supernatural mystery involving a young girl, who haunts Omar as a spooky and enigmatic ghost.
This film deals with a number of common issues in Pakistan that women and girls face, including sexual abuse, assault, transphobia and domestic violence. A gypsy girlnote reveals that she was the victim of pedophiles, and a woman is nearly mutilated and disfigured by her husband, leading Omar to wonder, what can be done to make a difference?
This film contains examples of the following tropes:
- Acid Attack: An abused lady almost has this happen to her until Omar intervenes.
- Badass Adorable: Happy Heart is cute and a wonderful friend, but also brave and willing to put herself in harm's way to help others.
- Domestic Abuse: A major plot point in the film.
- Ghastly Ghost: Omar meets the spooky ghost of a young girl. He learns that in her lifetime, she was going to collect water when a group of men found her and raped her.
- Otaku: A man fondles and kisses a pillow made to look like his favourite female anime character.
- Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil: The film's ghost girl is a victim of gang-rape and murder.
- A gypsy girlnote reveals that she was raped by adult men.
- Stranger in a Familiar Land: Omar returns home to Pakistan and is saddened to find this beautiful place marred by misogyny and sexism.
