Funny Pages is a 2022 American coming-of-age black comedy film written, directed, and edited by Owen Kline and produced by Josh and Benny Safdie. It premiered at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival and was released in the United States on August 26, 2022.
The film tells the story of a 17-year-old cartoonist Robert, who leaves home after the death of his mentor to forge his own path. He moves to a basement apartment in Trenton, New Jersey, and meets Wallace, a possibly unstable former cartoonist.
Funny Pages contains examples of:
- All for Nothing: Robert pursues a career as a comic book artist, which he does by dropping out of high school and moving in to a run down apartment. Only for him to move back home during the third act after catching his two roomates masturbating to katanos adult comics and on top of that he gets beat up by wallace after his drawing lesson goes wrong providing an uncertainty on his future plans.
- Cloudcuckoolander: Wallace, especially with his erratic behavior throughout the film and his many nonsensical actions.
- Downer Ending: Roberts's drawing lesson with Wallace goes horribly wrong when Wallace accidentally stabs Miles in the head with a pen, Causing Wallace to flee. Wallace attempts to escape stealing Robert's car, but he crashes it into the garage. He then quickly flees on foot causing Robert to run after him,Robert then gets beaten up by Wallace and receives a warning from him to leave him alone. Robert in his frail state then limply walks to the comic book store and sits at the counter to take in what just happened.
- Jerkass: Robert is shown to be rude, stubborn, condescending, and generally lacks self-awareness, in particular during conversations with Miles or his own parents.
- Lamecomeback:
Miles:You have asshole taste.
Robert:You love the taste of asshole.
- Only Friend: Miles is Roberts only friend
- We Hardly Knew Ye: Early on in the film, Roberts's art teacher Mr. Katano attempts to talk to Robert, during their conversation he is instantly killed after another vehicle collides into his car. This happens around 10 minutes into the movie.
