Fun is a 1994 independent drama film directed by Rafal Zielinski. It stars Alicia Witt and Renée Humphrey as Bonnie and Hillary, two Troubled Teens who become fast friends after a chance meeting while both are running away from home, and on impulse decide to murder an old woman.
The film cuts back and forth between the past and present. Scenes showing Bonnie and Hillary's relationship leading up to the murder are filmed in color, while present ones showing them at the juvenile detention center are done in black and white.
The film is based on the 1983 murder of Anna Brackett by Cindy Collier and Shirley Wolf. The title is derived from a diary entry by Wolf, which read: "Today, Cindy and I ran away and killed an old lady. It was lots of fun."
For their performances, Witt and Humphrey both won a Special Jury Recognition award at the 1994 Sundance Film Festival.
Fun provides examples of:
- Ambiguously Gay: Bonnie and Hillary are very close. The police find them cuddling in bed when they go to arrest them, and they speak of one another as one would a significant other. The notion that the girls are in love is brought up several times, and Hillary is asked at one point if she is a lesbian and if she and Bonnie have ever had sex, but the exact nature of the girls' feelings towards one another is never made clear.
- Cloudcuckoolander: Bonnie. An example would be when she speaks of an army of invisible ninjas that she says will show up to break her and Hillary out of jail.
- Crucified Hero Shot: Immediately before her death Bonnie poses with her arms outstretched and her wrists limp, and rests her head on her shoulder, mimicking Jesus hanging dead on the cross.
- Does Not Like Men: Hillary despises men, although she is still a fan of Axl Rose. Her reasoning is that men like Rose "know they're shit" but own up to it.
- Driven to Suicide: When Bonnie finds out that Hillary is being moved to another prison, she goes up to the roof of the building and stands on the ledge. The actual fall is not shown, the film cuts to the inside of the building as a crash is heard offscreen, so it's not clear if Bonnie intentionally jumped or just lost her footing. She dies after being in a coma for several days.
- Incest Is Relative: Both girls speak of having had some sort of incestuous sexual encounter.
- Brother–Sister Incest: Bonnie tells Hillary a story about how she pretended to be a girl her brother was interested in, and got in his lap to joke around with him, and it led to her brother raping her. It later turns out that Bonnie is a pathological liar who doesn't even have a brother.
- Parental Incest: Hillary was molested by her father. He was sent to jail for it, which her family blames her for.
- Tomboy and Girly Girl: Hillary is the tomboy to Bonnie's girly girl.
- Toxic Friend Influence: Bonnie and Hillary bring out the worst qualities in one another, to the point where a person ends up dead because of it.
- Villain Protagonist: The two protagonists are a pair of murderous delinquents.
