Tropes for the film:

  • Defector from Commie Land: A family of secret dissidents and some friends try to tunnel under the Berlin Wall from their ideally located house.
  • Good All Along: Walter Bruner is introduced trying to rent a room in a house from a family of secret dissidents who are trying to tunnel under the Berlin Wall from their home. After they refuse to give him the room, he keeps snooping around the area while alternately sporting ingratiating smiles and grim stares. It turns out that Bruner wants the room because he plans to dig under the Berlin Wall himself, and he joins forces with the family once he figures out what they're up to.
  • Tagline: "Headline Hot! Filmed Where It Happened!".
  • Walls of Tyranny: The movie is the first of many films in which the Berlin Wall was a symbol of oppression. It was released in late 1962, and was based on a real escape that took place in early 1962, after the Wall was finished in mid-1961.
