El Robo del Siglo ("The Heist Of The Century") is a 2020 Argentine film based on real events, starred by Guillermo Francella and Diego Peretti.

The movie portrays the robbery of an office of the Banco Rio in the area of Acasuso in Buenos Aires, on January 13th, 2006. The heist was planned by digging first a tunnel from the sewers to a room in the bank's basement. Then they stage a classic bank robbery with a hostage situation, while a special machine opens the safes below. Once done, they escaped throw the tunnel. Initially it seems that they managed to pull it off, but some days later the police captures them, one by one.

Tropes

  • Absurdly Spacious Sewer: The sewer is so big that even two boats can be in it.
  • Affably Evil: One of the hostages was a granny, and it was her birthday. The criminals took an "alfajor" from another hostage, improvised a birthday cake, made the "Happy birthday" song and then released her.
  • Anti-Villain: The band of robbers. Even if they are there to steal money, they go out of their way to not harm anyone during the robbery, even celebrating the birthday of an elderly woman (which is Truth in Television.) Mario even specifically targeted a bank in a high-class neighborhood so only wealthy people are affected and even then the bank will be forced to indemnify them.
  • Bank Robbery: From the point of view of the villains, it is the premise of the movie itself.
  • The Caper: We are shown how Fernando Araujo comes up with The Plan to rob the Banco Río.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Mario, the deuteragonist, has a daughter that he loves but has a strained relationship with due to his criminal activities.
  • Hostage Situation: The crew takes the bank's clients hostage and uses them to stage a classic bank robbery, while Fernando and "El Marciano" break into the bank boxes behind.
  • Hypocrite: One of the members of the band is a religious man. He discussed the robery with another one during a mass, and had no problem jumping from this topic of discussion to the prayers.
  • Karma Houdini: Subverted. The band managed to pull the crime off without problem, and ran away scot free. Then there are scenes of the criminals enjoying their money, with only background music and no dialogue, that seems like an epilogue. But no: in one of those scenes one of the criminals cheated on his wife, who discovered him. She denounced him and the band at the police, pointed the place in her home where he kept his part of the money, and they fell one by one.
  • Villain Protagonist: A film about a band that stole a bank? It goes without saying
