->''"If we can't protect the Earth, you can be damned well sure we'll avenge it."''
-->-- '''Tony Stark''', ''Film/{{The Avengers|2012}}''

The untitled fourth ''Avengers'' movie is a 2019 superhero film and the twenty-second film entry of the Franchise/MarvelCinematicUniverse. It is directed by [[Creator/TheRussoBrothers Joe & Anthony Russo]], and written by Christopher Markus & Stephen [=McFeely=] -- the team behind the [[Film/CaptainAmericaTheWinterSoldier second]] and [[Film/CaptainAmericaCivilWar third]] ''ComicBook/CaptainAmerica'' films. This team also worked on the previous film in the series, ''Film/AvengersInfinityWar'', which directly set up the events of this one.

Set five years after the cataclysmic events of Thanos's victory, half of the universe's sentient life is gone, and the completed [[ArtifactOfDoom Infinity Gauntlet]] has disappeared with the Mad Titan to a faraway world. However, even in this seemingly hopeless situation, the surviving heroes of the universe (Avengers, Guardians, and anyone else who is brave enough to fight on) are left to pick up the pieces. With a bit of hope, they intend to revive their friends and allies and the untold trillions of living beings that Thanos killed, and find a way to defeat him once and for all. But it won't be easy, and devastating sacrifices will have to be made in order to restore reality to a normal state.

While this is '''not''' expected to be the final ''Avengers'' movie, particularly in light of Disney's looming acquisition of Marvel assets from 21st Century Fox potentially opening the door for new characters to join the team, it is expected to be the last one with the original six characters serving as the focus of the film. The few details about Marvel's slate after 2019 suggest that the MCU will take a break from this team-up franchise in favor of building out other standalones.

''Film/AvengersInfinityWar'' and this film collectively serve as the [[GrandFinale culmination of everything that has happened]] in the Marvel Cinematic Universe [[SeriesFauxnale up until the end of Phase 3]], filmed back-to-back (with reshoots) between 2017 and 2018. As such, the cast for these movies is [[LoadsAndLoadsOfCharacters quite substantial]].
----
!!''Avengers 4'' contains examples of:
* EleventhHourRanger: Captain Marvel. After being absent from Earth's events throughout the MCU timeline, she returns to assist the other survivors of Thanos' finger snap.
* AdaptationalModesty: The Hulk wears much more in this film compared to most incarnations.
* AdaptationExpansion: The movie actually shows the fallout of Thanos's victory following the Snap. In the ''Infinity Gauntlet'' storyline, it was largely glossed over if favor of showing the surviving heroes take on Thanos.
* AfterTheEnd: The story shows how the world has been dealing with the loss of half of all life in the universe in the prior movie, which most likely [[DarkestHour isn't great]] (despite what Thanos may think).
* AmbiguousSituation:
** Ned Leeds, Cindy Moon, Sally Avril, Tiny [=McKeever=], Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross, Eitri the Dwarf King, Red Skull, Wong, and Shuri all appeared in ''Infinity War'', but they weren't shown in the ending, so their fates in this movie aren't yet known. Shuri was later revealed to be alive by Angela Bassett, who also stated that her character Ramonda (who did not appear in ''Infinity War'') survived.
** While ''Film/AntManAndTheWasp'' showed that Hank, Janet, and Hope Pym all got dusted, the only confirmed survivors from that film are Scott, Cassie, and the giant ant that's still in Scott's house. This means that the fates of Luis, Kurt, Dave, Maggie, Paxton, Bill Foster, Ava/Ghost, Sonny Burch, and Jimmy Woo are up in the air.
** Going even further, the fates of other characters -- aside from Ant-Man and Hawkeye -- who sat out ''Infinity War'' are also open to speculation. The creators of ''Infinity War'' outright confirmed that May Parker, Howard the Duck, Kraglin, Nakia, and Valkyrie survived Thanos's BadassFingersnap, but which of these characters (if any) have a role to play in the story is unclear. They were also reluctant to explain what happened to Korg and Miek, and claimed that talking about Jane Foster would be [[https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/avengers-infinity-war-directors-confirm-which-characters-died-off-screen_us_5af5f6fee4b032b10bfaa3a0?guccounter=1 "too spoilery"]]. It would later be revealed [[https://mcucosmic.com/2018/11/27/cosmic-quest-volume-two-aftermath-gives-a-glimpse-at-the-post-snap-world-of-avengers-4/ via a tie-in novel]] that [[Film/{{Thor}} Erik Selvig, Jane Foster, and Darcy Lewis]] are among the survivors.
* AnyoneCanDie: Carrying over from ''Infinity War'', which killed a number of the setting's most beloved characters and well over half the cast of the film, all bets are off for the major characters in the sequel. In fact, Marvel refused to release the Phase 4 slate until ''after'' the movie comes out, due to the fact that it would cause a LateArrivalSpoiler (the only officially confirmed movies involving established characters in the MCU are ''Film/SpiderManFarFromHome'', ''Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3'', untitled sequels to ''Doctor Strange'' and ''Black Panther'', and a solo ''Black Widow'' film -- which may or may not be a prequel).
* BatmanGambit: Doctor Strange's decision to hand Thanos the Time Stone in exchange for the sparing of Tony Stark's life, even if it meant his own death, is implied to be part of a greater plan to make sure that the heroes could get to [[MillionToOneChance the one outcome]] that he knew about where Thanos is defeated. Here, we see how it pays off.
* BeardOfSorrow: Inverted. Production art shows Steve having shaved following the last movie's DownerEnding.
* BigBad: Thanos, once again, is the villain the heroes need to defeat in order to bring back the half of the universe.
* BigBadassBattleSequence: There will be a massive action scene involving '''40''' characters, all of whom have names and backstories. It's been hyped as one of the movie's selling points.
* {{Bookends}}:
** The original six Avengers from ''Film/{{The Avengers|2012}}'' all survived the events of ''Infinity War'', and are confirmed to reassemble (and team up with the other surviving heroes) to put an end to Thanos's conquest for universal "[[KillEmAll balance]]" that started with the Chitauri attack.
** The trope is somewhat invoked character design-wise by having ComicBook/CaptainAmerica and ComicBook/IronMan, the MCU's two biggest players whose stories will almost certainly be wrapped up in these movies, wear outfits that look almost exactly like their classic comic book designs instead of the MCU's signature "modernized" look.
** Tony Stark's iconic "[[Film/TheAvengers2012 If we can't protect the Earth, you can be damned well sure we'll avenge it]]" line goes full circle considering they indeed ''couldn't'' protect the Earth, but are now seeking Thanos to avenge the fallen.
* TheBusCameBack:
** After sitting out ''Infinity War'', Hawkeye and Ant-Man return.
** Harley Keener, the kid from ''Iron Man 3'', makes a reappearance.
** In spite of being destroyed by Hela in ''Thor: Ragnarok'', Thor's original hammer -- Mjolnir -- somehow reappears fully intact, according to set photos taken by the Russo Brothers themselves.
** If Mark Ruffalo's testimony about working with Tilda Swinton and Cate Blanchett is accurate, then the Ancient One and Hela return.
* BusCrash: According to the Russos, both [[Film/TheIncredibleHulk Betty Ross]] and [[Film/{{Thor}} Lady]] [[Film/ThorTheDarkWorld Sif]] were [[KilledOffscreen turned to dust]] by the end of ''Infinity War''.
* TheCameo: Creator/StanLee has one, [[OncePerEpisode as usual]]. While Marvel has not issued a statement about Lee's future in the setting, it may possibly be the last live-action cameo he filmed before he passed away.[[note]]Lee's likeness appeared in ''Disney/RalphBreaksTheInternet'' and he voiced a cameo in ''WesternAnimation/SpiderManIntoTheSpiderVerse''. It is not clear if Lee filmed a cameo for ''Film/{{Captain Marvel|2019}}'' or ''Film/SpiderManFarFromHome'', although it has been noted that Creator/JamesGunn helped him film a number of cameos for Marvel movies before other Marvel movies actually started production.[[/note]]
* CallBack:
** Set photos indicate that we will see Captain America, Hulk, Thor, and Loki, along with Gamora and Nebula, wearing the outfits and having the appearances that they had in ''Film/{{The Avengers|2012}}'' and ''Film/GuardiansOfTheGalaxy'' respectively.
** Set photos also indicate that [[FunWithAcronyms B.A.R.F.]][[labelnote:*]]'''B'''inarily '''A'''ugmented '''R'''etro-'''F'''raming [[UnfortunateNames (Tony's really gotta work on that acronym).]][[/labelnote]] makes another appearance after having been introduced through ''Captain America: Civil War''.
* CastingGag: Creator/HiroyukiSanada's casting in the movie means this is the ''second'' time he's been cast in a [[Film/TheWolverine major Marvel production with Tokyo as a location]].
* TheCavalry: Among the characters who join the surviving Avengers from the previous film in their time of need are Captain Marvel, Hawkeye/Ronin, and Ant-Man. Valkyrie and Kraglin have been implied to return as well.
* ChangingOfTheGuard: It's not clear yet who exactly will be replaced, but it has been confirmed that Captain Marvel will step up and act as the new main hero after this movie.
* DarkerAndEdgier: Like its predecessor, this film is significantly darker than the other films in the setting. The mere backstory involves a universal-scale genocide with potentially wide-reaching collateral damage, and those heroes who didn't die in ''Infinity War'' are facing their DarkestHour. Though see LighterAndSofter below.
* DarkestHour: Let's see... Most of our heroes are dead, along with half of all life in the universe, and the means to fix everything -- the Infinity Gauntlet -- is still with Thanos. To say that our heroes have their work cut out for them is a massive understatement.
* DownerBeginning: Most of our heroes are dead by the end of the previous ''Avengers'' movie, and the number of problems only goes up from there.
* DramaPreservingHandicap: While not giving out too many details, the directors have stated that using the Infinity Gauntlet on such a large scale damaged Thanos ''permanently'', implying that he might not be quite as invincible when the heroes seek out a rematch. Even if it '''appears''' to be repaired, its powers have been scaled down enough that he can't pull off another snap.
* DramaticIrony: Tony's vision from ''Age Of Ultron'' involved seeing his original teammates dying in front of him while Thanos' army claimed victory. While most of what he saw ultimately came true, the original team, along with Rhodey, ended up being some of the only heroes to ''survive''.
* DyeOrDie: Inverted. Apparently Black Widow doesn't have to dye her hair to disguise her identity anymore.
* ForegoneConclusion:
** Creator/TomHolland accidentally spoiled that Spider-Man would be back, alive, in this movie, after the events of ''Infinity War''. This was kind of a given considering that his most recent movie has a sequel in the works, and that said sequel was stated to set the stage for the entire non-cosmic MCU after Phase 3.
** ''Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3'' is also in the works, and will set the stage for the cosmic part of the setting, so at least some of the Guardians will return as well (Star-Lord, Drax and Mantis, all of whom died in ''Infinity War'', being confirmed so far).%%Drax is not being killed off in this movie in spite of Dave Bautista's disillusionment with Marvel. GOTGV3 is still happening regardless.
** Doctor Strange and Black Panther also have sequels in development, so it's a given they'll be revived too and stay that way.
** The announcement of shows focused on them being released on the Creator/DisneyPlus streaming service seem to indicate that characters who get shows will be resurrected, presuming that the shows are not all prequels to ''Infinity War''.
** Considering that one, she's only appeared in one movie prior, and two, she has been confirmed to lead the Avengers in movies set after this one, it's safe to assume no matter who of the "living" side of the heroes falls in the battle against Thanos, Captain Marvel is sure to make it out okay.
* FromBadToWorse: Unsurprisingly, things get a whole lot worse before there's even a glimmer of hope that they'll get better.
* GrandFinale: The completion of the two-part culmination of the entire MCU up to this point started with ''Film/AvengersInfinityWar''.
* KilledOffForReal: While the movie will feature a lot of resurrections, it's also indicated that a number of characters won't make it out alive. And unlike what you would [[DeathIsCheap expect]] from comic books and adaptations, the plan is to have some of them ''stay'' dead. It's also been indicated that not everyone who died in ''Infinity War'' will get to come back here, or even that they'll die ''after'' they come back.
* LighterAndSofter: The approach to this movie, compared to ''Infinity War'', is described as this by the writers, even if it is still darker than the average MCU film. Best exemplified in [[https://www.buzzfeed.com/adambvary/avengers-infinity-war-ending-explained-spoilers this interview]]:
-->'''Christopher Markus:''' We broke your heart. Now we're going to blow your mind!
* LightIsGood: Many of the surviving Avengers, including Captain America, Rocket, and Thor, wear matching white sets of armor.
* LoadsAndLoadsOfCharacters:
** As with ''Infinity War'', the cast will have many named characters, if not ''[[UpToEleven even more]]'' than the first. Also worth noting is that the big "40 characters in an action scene" sequence will take place in this film, after the directors hyped it up during the press cycle for ''Infinity War'' (since both it and ''Avengers 4'' were being developed at the same time).
** It should be noted that the effect will be lessened at first (at least by MCU standards). Because most of the cast are dead, and word is that the dead only have a minor role, that leaves us with our surviving heroes (the founding Avengers + War Machine, Rocket, Nebula, Ant-Man and Captain Marvel) facing off against Thanos. Granted, an ''11 member team'' is still a lot, but considerably less compared to the overall cast.
* MagicPants: [[AvertedTrope Averted]] for once in regards to the Hulk. As shown in the above bit of concept art, the Hulk will be sporting a full-body suit made specifically for his size.
* MeaningfulRename: Clint returns after his absence in ''Infinity War'', but will return as Ronin. That was the identity he had after the ''ComicBook/CivilWar'' event in the comics, much like the movies.
* MyGreatestFailure: Peter Parker's death from the snap will have a huge impact on Tony, and it will also most likely give him the motivation to SetRightWhatOnceWentWrong.%% The same could be said for Steve, Rocket, Ant-Man, and Okoye after losing Bucky, the other Guardians, the Pym family, and T'Challa, respectively.
* MythologyGag: While the Russos have stated that this movie will not be adapting any particular comic storyline, there will be a lot of nods to certain stories and events in the Marvel Comics history:
** It has been stated that the Hulk and Rocket will strike up a friendship in this film. This is a nod to Rocket's first Franchise/MarvelUniverse appearance being in an issue of ''Incredible Hulk''.[[note]]Rocket, like ComicBook/StarLord, made his first general appearance in an issue of ''Marvel Preview'' as "Rocky Raccoon", in a stand-alone story unrelated to the mainstream universe.[[/note]]
** Ant-Man being seen interacting with the Avengers during the Battle of New York is a nod to the fact that Ant-Man was one of the original members of the Avengers in the comics, along with the Wasp (although in the comics it's Hank Pym instead of Scott Lang).
** Iron Man's Mark 86 armor will resemble a somewhat modernised but otherwise completely accurate recreation of his classic Mark 2 Armor (the first red and gold one) in the comics, while Cap's new suit will finally incorporate the classic chainmail design of his comics outfit.
* NextSundayAD: The movie is reportedly set five years after the events of ''Infinity War'', this would put it in the year 2023.
* NothingIsTheSameAnymore:
** The fallout of the post-snap universe in ''Avengers: Infinity War'' is that everything is fundamentally different -- half of all life in the Universe is gone, surviving teams and their respective civilizations are faced with significant upheaval, and things have generally gone FromBadToWorse all around.
** The people running the MCU have noted that, after the events of '''this''' film, the setting will be irrevocably changed, even if a bunch of ''Infinity War'' deaths are undone in the process.
--->'''Creator/KevinFeige:''' There will be two distinct periods: everything before ''Avengers 4'' and everything after. I know it will not be in ways people are expecting.
* PlayingGertrude: Since the movie will appear to have a TimeSkip that means that the characters will actually be ''older'' than their actors this time around. This puts characters like Tony and Clint in their fifties, Natasha in her late thirties, and so on.
* PuttingTheBandBackTogether: The original six Avengers reunite to fix Thanos' mess -- and with the help of a few unlikely allies, they go about finding a way to bring several of their old allies back from the dead.
* TheRemnant: Thanos's obliteration of half the life in the universe means that many once proud factions and places have been reduced to few and made into a shell of their former selves.
** While all of the original Avengers are miraculously still alive, War Machine is the only remaining survivor from the New Avengers team that was created after Ultron was destroyed. He was even the only other known hero at the time they first assembled.
** With Bucky's death, Cap is now the only remaining member of the Howling Commandos unit from World War II that's still alive today.
** Rocket is the last of the original five Guardians.
** Nebula is the only surviving "child" of Thanos, which is somewhat ironic considering that she's TheUnfavorite.
** Thor is among the last Asgardians that are still alive, and though Valkyrie is confirmed to be alive the Asgardians aren't exactly the proud race they once were.
** After ''Infinity War'', there isn't much left of Wakanda to speak of. Okoye, M'Baku, Nakia, Shuri, and Ramonda are the only named Wakandans we know are still alive.
** Wong may be among the few left of the Masters of the Mystic Arts.
** With Hank, Janet, and Hope Pym all dusted, Scott Lang is the only survivor affiliated with Pym Technologies.
* RetiredMonster: Thanos begins the movie content with retirement after killing half of all sentient life in the universe, [[HiddenDepths albeit with mental and emotional scars from his experience]].
* SequelGoesForeign: Black Widow, Hawkeye/Ronin, and Captain America end up going to Japan to deal with the {{Yakuza}}.
* SeriesFauxnale: While this is the end of the Thanos and Infinity Gauntlet MythArc that's been built up since ''The Avengers'', it's not the end to the overall story of the MCU. Marvel's producers have described the movie as being "a" finale, but not "''the''" finale for a reason.
* SirNotAppearingInThisTrailer: If Marvel Studios is to be believed, none of the dead characters from ''Infinity War'' or ''Ant-Man and the Wasp'' are going to be advertised in the trailers or surrounding media even though many are believed to come BackFromTheDead in some way. This means that Bucky Barnes, Falcon, Vision, Scarlet Witch, Spider-Man, Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Gamora, Star-Lord, Mantis, Drax, Groot, Wasp, Hank, Janet and others will ''not'' be showing up anywhere in the advertising. However, it has been noted that this may change later on into the film's ad campaign.
* SixthRanger:
** War Machine to the founding Avengers, being the only non-founding member to survive ''Infinity War''.
** Officially joining the crew for the first time are Ant-Man, Rocket, Nebula, and Captain Marvel.
* SpiritualSuccessor: Producer Creator/KevinFeige mentioned ''Series/StarTrekTheNextGeneration'' episode [[Recap/StarTrekTheNextGenerationS7E24AllGoodThings "All Good Things..."]] as a key influence for this film.
* SpoilerTitle: The movie's name wasn't revealed for months after the release of ''Infinity War'' because, by its nature, it gives away what happened in the previous film.
* StatusQuoIsGod: All word on this movie is that this trope will be fully '''averted'''. While a bunch of dead characters will come back to life, there's also going to be a bunch of other characters who get KilledOffForReal, not to mention who will actually stay dead. Also, there's a TimeSkip which jumps the movie ahead a number of years AfterTheEnd, and we'll see just how much the world has changed after the Snap. How much this carries over to subsequent films isn't fully clear, though it should be noted that the people behind the film state that the MCU will explore different eras and timelines following the end of Phase 3.
* TimeSkip: The film is believed to take place roughly five years after ''Infinity War'', showing how the world has changed in the fallout of Thanos's victory. Gwyneth Paltrow confirmed that Pepper and Tony married during this time and that they had a child, and later information also showed that Stark's latest version of the suit is the Mark 85, a significant jump from the Mark 50 in the preceding movie. Also, ComicBook/CassieLang has been [[TimeShiftedActor time-shifted]] into a new teenage actress to be closer to her modern comics counterpart.
* WreckedWeapon: The Infinity Gauntlet is heavily damaged but still functional, presumably as a way of indicating that Thanos can't wipe out the other half of the Universe with a snap like he did last time. Promo art suggests that he's able to completely repair it.

To see if they could work together when we needed them to, to fight the battles that we never could. Phil Coulson died still believing in that idea... in heroes."''

* ForegoneConclusion:
* LoadsAndLoadsOfCharacters:
* NothingIsTheSameAnymore:
* SixthRanger:

->''"There was an idea -- Stark knows this -- called the Avengers Initiative. The idea was to bring together a group of remarkable people, to see if they could become something more. To see if they could work together when we needed them to, to fight the battles that we never could. Phil Coulson died still believing in that idea... in heroes."''

While this is not expected to be the final ''Avengers'' movie, particularly with Disney's looming acquisition of Marvel assets from 21st Century Fox potentially opening the door for new characters to join the team, it is expected to be the last one with the original six characters serving as the focus of the film. The few details about Marvel's slate after 2019 suggest that the MCU will take a break from this team-up franchise in favor of building out other standalones.

* AnyoneCanDie: Carrying over from ''Infinity War'', which killed a number of the setting's most beloved characters and well over half the cast of the film, all bets are off for the major characters in the sequel. In fact, Marvel refused to release the Phase 4 slate until ''after'' the movie comes out, due to the fact that it would cause a LateArrivalSpoiler (the only officially confirmed movies are ''Film/SpiderManFarFromHome'', ''Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3'', untitled sequels to ''Doctor Strange'' and ''Black Panther'', and a solo ''Black Widow'' film -- which may or may not be a prequel).

** The trope is somewhat invoked character design-wise by having Captain America and Iron Man, the MCU's two biggest players whose stories will almost certainly be wrapped up in these movies, wear outfits that look almost exactly like their classic comic book designs instead of the MCU's signature "modernized" look.

** War Machine to the founding Avengers, him being the only non-founding member to survive ''Infinity War''.
** Joining the crew are Rocket, Ant-Man, Nebula and Captain Marvel. Scott at least had some prior history with them in ''Civil War'' (even if no one really knew who he was), the others are all new.
*** Since Rocket and Nebula know each other, Carol is truly the only completely fresh face in the lineup.
