* Particularly Unwound. Careful - disturbing elements and possibly NSFW.

[[WMG:General Fics]]
Stories focused on the family and the friendly relationships of the cast. Plot-focused stories or light day-in-the-life stories. Pretty much anything that isn't focused on romance.

* Characters: Nobby Nobbs, Cheery Littlebottom
* Comments: Great little exploration of gender themes.

In The Blood by Sam [=Storyteller=]

* Comments: -

Some Buggers by Sam [=Storyteller=]
* Recommended by @/GGCrono

* Comments: Brilliant OriginalFlavor story that really captures the tone of Pterry's own writings.

Cunning Artifice by Fanless
* Recommended by Tropers/TMOH
* Status: Complete
* Synopsis: In the Ankh-Morpork of a distant future, there lives a brilliant scientist and two men who are not all they seem.
* Comments: Pratchett meets Asimov in the best possible way--though the characters are transferred to a new setting, their voices and personalities are perfectly Canon.

Exit Interviews by Casira
* Recommended by Tropers/trimeta
* Status: Complete
* Synopsis: Ever wondered how Susan went from being a governess in Hogfather to a schoolteacher in Thief of Time? This fic will tell you.
* Comments: A very sweet story showing how Susan deals with "CONCLUSIONS AND DEPARTURES," to quote her grandfather. Good OriginalFlavor, fits seamlessly into canon.

Unwound by Miss Yetigoosecreature
* Recommended by Tropers/GosuroriOtaku
* Status: Complete
* Synopsis: There was a Sam Vimes she knew, who went out and came home again, and out there was another Sam Vimes who hardly belonged to her and lived in the same world as all those men with the dreadful names.
* Comments: A brilliant expansion from a line from The Fifth Elephant which perfectly captures Sam Vimes' struggle with his inner beast, especially when he's dealing with the most horrible things humans can do.

Justice is Done by Nimbus Llewelyn
* Recommended by TheEnmityOfAges1994
* Status: Complete
* Synopsis: It was a nasty job, but someone had to do it. In this case, the execution of the last King of Ankh Morpork by Suffer-Not-Injustice Vimes.
* Comments: A short, punchy, and cleverly understated look at the execution of the last King of Ankh. Written with a deep understanding of the Vimes mindset, and an awareness that this isn't a grand good vs evil spectacle, it's just one man doing a decidedly nasty job one early morning a long time ago. Because no one else will.
** I have more than once flipped through the Watch books and Pratchett's short stories looking for this scene, it's that true to Pratchett's voice.

Employment by Makou
* Recommended by Tropers/Bookhobbit
* Status: Complete
* Synopsis: "Shortly after that ugly business with the Octavo, Rincewind finds himself in The Mended Drum feeling sorry for himself. He isn't the only one."
* Comments: Nice look at how and why Rincewind started in at the Library. Set between The Light Fantastic and Sourcery.

Inspiration by Indigo Tantarian
* Recommended by Tropers/Bookhobbit
* Status: Complete
* Synopsis: "What inspired Ponder to search for solutions beyond traditional magic, or Rincewind to open the Octavo? Probably nothing like this, but between the Trousers of Time and quantum, you can't be sure."
* Comments: Good look at Rincewind and Ponder as students at UU. Which may not make sense by the unofficial official Discworld timeline, but blame it on the History Monks and enjoy the story, because it's a very good rendering of all the characters involved.

The New Guild by A.A. Pessimal.
* Recommended by Tropers: Tropers/AgProv
* Status: Complete
* Synopsis: a good short introduction to the works of A.A. Pessimal. Over ninety fanfics submitted and most of them Discworld. Lord Vetinari has to rule on the establishment of a new City Guild, and whether or not to award it a Charter in the face of determined opposition from vested interests.
* Comments: funny and witty and succeeding in overturning and subverting what was already a Discworld subversion. Open it up and read the unanimously good reviews it garnered.

The Brain Thief by hollimichele.
* Recommended by
* Status: Complete
* Synopsis: Young Sam grows up, meets a girl, cracks a case, and tells a lie. Not necessarily in that order.
* Comments: A wonderfully written and plotted story that reads like something by Pterry himself, together with humour and philosophy and some really heartwarming moments.

A Study in Batesian Mimicry by Twist .
* Recommended by: Feranard
* Status: Complete
* Synopsis: "'Vetinari, for the second time in his life, looked at what some might have called his reflection. He wouldn't call it that, if only because normally his actual reflection breathed along with him.' One-shot, because I miss "
* Comments: Taking place after the Truth, this is an interesting look at what Vetinari could have done with

Mr. Vimes'd Go Spare! by Lunik
* Recommended by: Tropers/Andyroid
* Status: Complete
* Synopsis: In the wake of the death of his Grace Sir Samuel Vimes, the various city watches across the Disc are brought together in a way seldom observed among coppers.
* Comments: An impressive little fic that explores the idea, introduced at several points in the Discworld series, that "a man's not dead as long as his name is still spoken". Death may have come for Sam Vimes, but his legacy lives on... with, ultimately, unusual results.

Where's My Cow by shewhoguards
* Recommended by: Tropers/LadyOfProcrastination
* Status: Complete
* Synopsis: Are we not all, in some way, searching for our cow? At least, Vimes is, and he's enlisted the Guard to help.
* Comments: A valuable cow goes missing in Ankh-Morpork. HilarityEnsues when Sam Vimes is ordered to track it down.

Modern Love by Penknife
* Recommended by: Tropers/LadyOfProcrastination
* Status: Complete
* Synopsis: It's amazing how the world rarely gets less complicated. Written for LGBT Fest, for the prompt Discworld, any character, The ongoing changes in dwarven views on gender and sexuality have any number of repercussions. How many young dwarves are "coming out" as the gender they weren't born as? Conversely, is all this openness actually eroding dwarven freedom to view themselves, however, and marry whomever, they wish?
* A thoughtful piece that explores the effects of the dwarf femininity movement more deeply than canon.

Rag Week by A.A. Pessimal
* Recommended by: Tropers/Cybertoy0
* Status: Complete
* Synopsis: In British universities, Rag Week is an excuse for the students to make nuisances of themselves importuning people for money and performing daft and dangerous stunts. This is the Unseen University version. Expanding on bare bones of story in the canon.

How To Assassinate Ridcully by Andrew Salt
* Recommended by:Tropers/AgProv
* Status: Complete
* Synopsis: a young Assassin is detailed to write a standard report on the ease or otherwise with which Arch-Chancellor Mustrum Ridcully may be inhumed. His report squarely places Ridcully in the Vimes category of "almost un-inhumable". Four pages of lovely, glorious, work: a perfect crossover of fanart and fanfiction. There is plenty of Andrew Salt on the deviantArt site, although this is the only piece that can be considered fanfiction and not fan-art. Go there and enjoy!

The Importance of Being Mostly Human by gogollescent
* Recommended by Masterbow, Andyroid
* Status: Complete
* Synopsis: In which Susan identifies "Where's My Cow" as a proto-talismanic anchor for Young Sam's continued health and existence, and tries very hard not to wonder what the Vimes' butler does on his day off. There may also be a lesson about the meaning of Hogswatch, but no one wants to talk about that.
* Comments: A fantastic canon compliant piece that reads as if it was taken straight out of one of the Discworld novels.

A Shifting of Allegiences by Indigo Tantarian
* Recommended by Misuki
* Status: Complete
* Synopsis: Before the book Discworld/UnseenAcademicals, politics were happening in the Unseen University. What caused the rift between the faculty, and where do their loyalties lie?
* Comments: A nice exploration to an untold backstory. It seems like it could fit well into the Discworld 'verse as a short story. The characters are really well-written. Fans of the [=UU=] wizards should love it.

To Keep the World Turning by Leif Erikson
* Recommended by: pmraptor98
* Status: Complete
* Synopsis: A storm is raging over the Discworld. In Lancre and Ankh-Morpork, the waters are rising and some people, notably a few witches, wizards, coppers, and the granddaughter of Death, worry this could mean the end of their world... unless they do something first. Written as a tribute to the late Sir Terry Pratchett, this story seeks to honor his beloved world and characters.
* Comments: Fantastically written fic that is as true to Pratchett's writing as you can get, especially now that he's gone. You will weep, and laugh, and know that the Discworld and all of its wonderful characters (as well as some of its not-so-wonderful ones too) will always be able to make you smile.

On Being Female by Nomad
* Recommended by: SashaHoneypalm
* Status: One-shot
* Synopsis: Dwarf gender politics are complicated, even before Captain Carrot gets involved.
* Comments: The author does a spot-on Carrot voice. And Pratchett voice, for that matter.

Wyrd Sippers by rosefox
* Recommended by: SashaHoneypalm
* Status: One-shot
* Synopsis: It's the witching season. A perfect time for dark sabbats and midnight cackling. Only, Granny isn't so sure about this "pumpkin spice" business.

[[WMG:Shipping Shipping Fics]]
Stories focused on the romantic relationships between the cast.

Transformations by Sam-Storyteller, also known as Sam Starbuck (AU)
* Recommended by Roach Patrol
* Status: Complete
* Pairing: Angua/Sam Vimes
* Synopsis: An AU where Sybil Ramkin does not survive Guards! Guards!, and so when Angua is added to the expanding Night Watch, Sam Vimes falls (very reluctantly) in love.
* Comments: PG (K+ ). Very sweet.
** @/Tabby recommends that you look elsewhere, and editorializes that she doesn't understand why this fic is so popular. It reads like canon because it is canon, with just a few extra paragraphs thrown in here and there and Vimes taking Carrot's place.

The Seamstress Series by Mercator
* Recommended by @/Lagomorph
* Status: Complete
* Pairing: Vetinari/Hannah
* Synopsis: Composed of Say Yes, A Conspiracy of Beers, Vetinari in Absentia, and His Lordship Had a Little Lamb -- following the courtship/power plays/adventures of Lord Vetinari and Hannah, who's a... seamstress. My favorites are the first and third, but all four are good. Of course, I'm a sucker for Vetinari.
* Comments: PG-13 (The first is possibly an R. lists it as M, for full disclosure).

TGWTG/Discworld Crossover by iambic5
* Recommended by @/AuntZelda
* Status: Complete
* Pairing: Vetinari/Linkara (no really …)
* Synopsis: A strike: six seven-part series: " TGWTG Does Discworld", Genre Savvy, Out of Character; Interview; Sight; Interview, Redux (all drabbles), Rumor, Return, Rescue, and " Lullaby"-- TGWTG personalities land in Anhk-Morpork and HilarityEnsues, while Linkara is 'asked' by Vetinari to round them up and get them home. Then Vetinari starts hitting on Linkara and it becomes a CrackPairing CrossoverShip series that nobody was expecting, least of all the author. You WILL ship Linkara/Vetinari by the time you've finished reading!
* Comments: TV-15, there is some slight smut but it's mostly PG-13 fun. Some familiarity with is suggested, lest the in-jokes soar right over your head.

" Death Insurance" by Nimori
* Recommended by: Idraena
* Status: Complete
* Pairing: Death/Vetinari
* Synopsis: Death and Vetinari bond and fall in love when Death comes to take a soul Vetinari has killed. Something of a crack pairing, but adorably Victorian, almost in-character and hilarious (complete with footnotes!).
* Rating: PG, mostly for the subtext. Mostly good clean fun.
* Comments: Seconded. A brilliant and fun romance between a skeleton and our favorite Patrician.

" Jolt", by Your Evil Nemisis Bwahaha
* Recommended by: @/Belphegor
* Status: Complete
* Pairing: Rincewind/OC (of sorts)
* Synopsis: Magical flares? Serial killers? Ankh-Morpork needs a hero! Unfortunately, all it's got is a certain Wizzard and a mysterious young lady with a taste for trouble...
* Comments: The original (female) character of this story is the spunky niece of Vetinari, a bright, unconventional and very pretty girl who is also ... And yet, through sheer writing talent, the author manages NOT to make this is Mary Sue. Of course, it helps that the canon characters are perfectly characterised (especially Rincewind), the story itself is enthralling, and it ends on a note.
* Rating: M (for rather gory stuff that happens in relation to the "serial killer" bit). And it's a one chapter, but it's long.

" Midwinter" by kindkit
* Recommended by: Idraena
* Status: Complete
* Pairing: Drumknott/Vetinari
* Synopsis: Another crack pairing, but helped considerably by Drumknott's only real canon characteristic being his exceptional skill at his job. Exquisitely written, not at all like Pterry's style but not out of character. Details what happens when Drumknott finally gets the courage to tell Vetinari that he wants their relationship to be something more. Second part may be found here.
* Rating: R

" Nature Studies" by A.A. Pessimal
* Recommended by: Ag Prov
* Status: Complete (The story ends at chapter 12, but A.A. Pessimal left it open to add some extra stuff)
* Pairing: Ponder Stibbons/miss Smith-Rhodes
* Synopsis: In which a half-baked attempt by Dibbler to establish a Longleat-like safari park in Ankh-Morpork goes dramatically wrong. In the ensuing urban safari to round up and recapture the animals, Ponder Stibbons meets a personable young woman from a faraway former colony who shares a few things in common with him. She's a scientist, a zoologist, single.... and an Assassin. But romance begins against a background of lions, bewilderbeeste, chimpanzees, gorillas, and other fauna of her native Howondaland. Ponder reasons that an Assassin girlfriend is probably going to be more restful than risking death in the HEM every day, while she vows to fatten him up a bit and improve his presentation and dress sense. The romance begins here and continues in "Pere Porcher" and "Whys and Weres". Johanna Smith Rhodes is a very minor character in the canon: these stories bring her to centre-stage as a "Rimward Howondalandian", ie from a country which is not South Africa in the same way Fourecks is not Australia.
* Rating: U, like all good wildlife movies for all the family.

Aftermath by VimesLady
* Recommended by tgjer
* Status: Complete
* Pairing: Vetinari/Vimes
* Synopsis: In which extreme circumstances present opportunity. H/C like woah, but not nearly as cracky as the basic idea would seem.
* Comments: The only Vetinari/Vimes I've found where they both come across as both fully in-character and sane. Also, trigger warning for description of rape that happened before the start of the story.
* Rating: Hard R.

Music by B.S. Johnson by icarus_chained
* Recommended by browneyednerd
* Status: Dormant (2 entries, which are both Complete; the series itself is Dormant)
* Ships: Sam Vimes/Sybil Vimes, Sam Vimes/Havelock Vetinari, Sybil Vimes/Havelock Vetinari, Sybil Vimes/Sam Vimes/Havelock Vetinari
* Synopsis: Sam and Havelock aren't really fooling anyone, and Sybil decides to take matters into her own hands, for the good of all concerned.

Dwarf Bread by keswindhover
* Recommended by @/Micah.
* Status: Complete
* Synopsis: The Buffybot from Series/BuffyTheVampireSlayer ends up in Ankh-Morpork; HilarityEnsues.
* Comments: A chaptered fic, extremely funny, which perfectly captures the voices of both Literature/Discworld and Series/BuffyTheVampireSlayer characters.

Prudent by Chibiursachan
* Recommended by Thinks Too Much
* Status: Complete
* Synopsis: Kadaj, Yazoo and Loz, from Anime/FinalFantasyVIIAdventChildren, somehow make it to Discworld. Granny Weatherwax has a number of opinions of this.
* Comments: Third-person limited, Granny's perspective, and absolutely hilarious. Those of you who are wondering how Creator/SquareEnix's Bishonen aesthetic could possibly mesh with Discworld, well, that's most of why it's funny.

Due Rimward by Paul Jamison.
* Recommended by Tropers/DaibhidC
* Status: Complete
* Synopsis: Series/DueSouth crossover. Ray and Fraser arrive in Ankh-Morpork, and help stop a nobleman with an evil plan.
* Comments: A brilliant grasp of all characters (it manages to maintain both Original Flavors), with much made of the similarity between Constable Fraser and Captain Carrot.

Policing Middle Earth by aoteoran.
* Recommended by Tropers: Tropers/AgProv
* Status: Dormant
* Synopsis: Lord Vetinari has made contact with Steward Denethor via a possibly malfunctioning palantir. He is prevailed upon to send Sam Vimes into Middle Earth as a tenth member of the Fellowship of the ring, so as to hold together a party of inept dreamers and make a long-shot desperate idea work. Watch and laugh as Discworld conceptions of elves, trolls, wizards, Dwarfs, etc, clash with Middle Earth's rather nobler ideals. Vimes duly treats the War of the Rings with the same "breach of the peace" attitude he expressed over the Leshp war...
* Shipping: none. don't waste time looking for it.
* Comments: gleefully anarchic crossover written in the best Discworld tradition as two divergent cultures collide.

Fanfic/TheDetectiveAndTheDiplomat by Beth Einspanier
* Recommended by: Tropers/Andyroid
* Status: Complete
* Synopsis: Two mysteries. Two of the greatest minds in the multiverse. One variable. Oh bugger... Sherlock Holmes - Discworld crossover.
* Comments: A clever little crossover that features not one, but two intriguing mysteries, and effortlessly switches back and forth between the styles of Discworld and the Sherlock Holmes stories.

End Of the Line by shewhoguards
* Recommended by NinjaMaid
* Status: Complete
* Actual preview as written: Hell was, Snape decided, a crowded railway platform. Post Deathly Hallows. Contains spoilers.
* Synopsis: Death collects souls from the Harry Potter Universe via a metaphysical representation of the Platform Nine-And-Three-Quarters. You will cry.
* Comments: If you're a fan of Harry Potter and the Discworld you should read this fic at least once in your life. One of the truly beautiful masterpieces. Contains death, Death and Death's granddaughter. It made me cry for Peter Pettigrew and Bellatrix Lestrange. Yes, really.

Of Elements and Existence by lost spook
* Recommended by User/DaibhidC
* Status: Complete
* Crossover: Series/SapphireAndSteel
* Synopsis: There are some places even Elements should never go. The Discworld is unquestionably one of them...
* Comments: An excellent grasp of all the characters as Sapphire, Steel and Silver find themselves in a part of the multiverse where they're the anomalies, and encounter the wizards, the witches, and Death.

A Spell of Absence by baroque_mongoose
* Recommended by: Dame-Amaryllis
* Status: Complete
* Crossover with: Webcomic/GirlGenius
* Synopsis: Some of the students at Unseen University try to summon a demon. Unfortunately, they actually end up summoning Agatha, Zeetha, Violetta, Mr Wooster, Dimo and Krosp (oh, and the weasel, but that should probably go without saying). It falls on Ponder Stibbons to try to get them safely back. It would really help if he had a clearer idea where they came from in the first place...
