Fanfic / Vee Lays An Egg

Go To

Vee Lays an Egg is an The Owl House fanfiction story where, exactly as the title says, Vee unexpectedly lays an egg. Now she and her partner Masha have to deal with becoming surprise parents, especially since Vee knows almost nothing about her own species.

Vee Lays An Egg contains examples of:

  • Adaptational Badass: In this universe Masha has a palisman and knows some magic, something that they were never shown to have in canon.
  • All Just a Dream: When Vee wakes up after laying her egg, she initially assumes that it was just a dream until Camila sets her straight.
  • All Myths Are True: Given that basilisk eggs turn rainbow-colored before hatching, and the fact that basilisks were supposedly from a Titan body to the far east, Masha theorizes that basilisks were the basis of the Australian Rainbow Serpent legends.
  • Babies Ever After: The story is set a few years after the end of the show, with Vee and Masha becoming parents. Vee also suspects that Luz and Amity and Hunter and Willow won't be far behind them.
  • Bizarre Alien Reproduction: Apparently for basilisk to become pregnant, they need to bite their partner and drain some of their liforce at the same time that their partner is biting them, causing their blood and lifeforce to mix.
  • But I Can't Be Pregnant!: Vee is baffled to find out that she laid an egg when Camila tells her, initially assuming that it was a dream.
  • Exiled to the Couch: A variant, Masha ends up kicked to the couch, not because they and Vee are fighting, but because the egg and Vee take up so much of the bed that there's no room for them. Masha gets around this by building a makeshift nest for them and Vee to sleep with the egg in.
  • Late to the Realization: Right after laying her egg, Vee is so tired, it takes her a second to realize what happened when Camila tells her what she did.
Vee: Mom? What are you doing here?
Camila: You called me a few minute ago, said you wanted a checkup.
Vee: Did I? Weeeeellll okay then.
Camila: Vee, sweetie, did you know you just laid an egg?
Vee: Oh, I guess I did. Guess that makes you an abuela now... ha ha, I'm... tired... (starts to drift off to sleep before waking up) Wait, I did what?!
Camila: Yes, from the looks of things, you made a little makeshift nest and laid an egg.
    Vee: ... Oh... (blacks out)
  • Meaningful Name: Vee and Masha decide that "Belinda" (meaning both "pretty one" and "serpent") will be their daughter's first name, with their middle name being "Morgan", due to the fact that they'll likely inherit Masha's love of magic.
  • Mundane Utility: Masha uses a few hover glyphs to help carry the egg over to the newly constructed next, though they're still very nervous about accidentally dropping it.
  • Not in Front of the Kid: While Masha builds a nest for them, Vee, and the egg to sleep in, they accidentally hit their thumb with a hammer, stopping themself from swearing in front of the egg.
Masha: Mother- (looks at the egg) ... lover. Yes, a mother loving hammer."
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten: Apparently Luz is still embarrassed about saying "Crikey" after Amity kissed her in "Clouds on the Horizon", and will get flustered if it's brought up.
  • Panicky Expectant Father: Gender-Inverted, Vee is rather nervous and overprotective of her egg, to the point that Masha has to basically kick her out of the house for her meeting with Lilith, and until they take the time to build a makeshift nest they'd been basically Exiled to the Couch because Vee was sleeping around it and leaving no room on the bed.
  • Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: Vee does this when she tries to rationalize what she did.
    Vee: I laid an egg.
    Camila: Yes.
Vee: No Mom, you don't understand. I... LAID... A... EGG!
  • Rule of Cool: Apparently the reason that Eda uses a hook as the primary replacement for her hand is that it looks cooler.
  • Surprise Pregnancy: Vee, not knowing much about her basilisk biology beyond the basic shapeshifting and magic-draining aspects, didn't realize that she was pregnant until she finished laying her egg.
