Fanfic / The Seer and His Butterfly

Go To

Bruno Madrigal marries his best friend Sara to save her from her abusive family. She becomes pregnant and dies giving birth to their only daughter Mirabel.

The Seer and His Butterfly is an Encanto fanfic by KammieCeleek. It can be read on Archive of Our Own here.

This fanfic provides examples of:

  • Arranged Marriage: Sara only came to the encanto to escape her Tía and Tío's attempts at marrying her off to a significantly older man, her marriage to Bruno being a convenient way to ensure it doesn't happen.
  • Artificial Outdoors Display: Reflecting her Master of Illusion gift, Maya's room is full of animate portraits of the family and its appearance can be altered to whatever she wants, turning it into a sandy beach when they throw a party post-gift ceremony.
Camilo: Okay, Maya officially has the coolest room.
  • Baby's First Words: Chapter 4 is all about trying to get Mirabel to speak her first word. Big shock, it's "Papa".
  • Babies Ever After: By Chapter 21, Mirabel had married her boyfriend Joseph and are expecting, revealing this to the family as a Birthday card to Bruno. When Bruno has a vision of the outcome out of fear that she'll die from it like his wife did, he finds out she was having twins.
  • Bad Hair Day: In Chapter 2, Isabela and Dolores give Mirabel an impromptu haircut. Since they are all young children, it ends with Mirabel's hair being left a giant mess and Isabela and Dolores being grounded.
  • Death by Childbirth:
    • Sara had died giving birth to Mirabel, a fact they knew would happen years before it happened when Bruno had an involuntary vision of it. By the time she finds out she was pregnant, Sera had already made peace with it.
    • Defied with Mirabel. When Mirabel becomes pregnant, Bruno becomes so worried that history would repeat itself that he has a vision. Not only does he find out that she'll pull through just fine, he finds out that she's having twins.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Ramona Flores was a potential suitor of Bruno's whom he rejected, and ever since she (and by extension the Flores family) had been considered a personal enemy to the Madrigals, trying to sow distrust of them in the encanto and doing what they can to inconvenience them.
  • Like Brother and Sister: When Mirabel was a baby, Isabela played the part of big sister to the girl, playing with her and caring for her when Bruno couldn't. This changed after Mirabel's gift ceremony, the added pressure Alma put her under to compensate for Mirabel's lack of gift souring Isabel's opinion of her.
  • Master of Illusion: The gift Maya receives is the ability to create illusions, making herself invisible being a secondary ability.
  • Parental Substitute: With Mirabel's birth-mother having died giving birth to her, Pepa stepped in to nurse and take care of her when Bruno was to emotionally broken to look after her properly. Ever since, she had taken to calling her "mama", a trend that would continue when Pepa and Félix took her in after Bruno disappeared.
  • Platonic Life-Partners: While Bruno and Sara did marry, it was a Marriage of Convenience and they never really moved beyond being best friends.
  • Related Differently in the Adaptation: While Mirabel was Julieta and Agustín's third daughter and Isabela and Luisa's younger sister in canon, here she's Bruno's daughter, later to be raised as her Tía Pepa and Tío Félix's daughter when he disappears.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Out of all of the "potential suitors" Mirabel is given, she ends up marrying Joseph, the only boy in the village who has been consistently nice to her while the others started out as bullies.
  • Skewed Priorities: Played for Laughs. Isabela has a passion for plant symbolism and her Berserk Button is its misapplication, so when the boys in the village that bullied Mirabel start trying to "woo" her, Isabela's big gripe is thus.
Isabela: Enrique gave her buttercups. Buttercups!
Camillo: I'm going to pretend I have any idea what that means and move on.
