Remnants of a Gold Gear
is a crossover between RWBY, Gears of War and Arknights by TheManThatWalksTheAbyss115, writer of Wolves That Walk Alone, on Fanfiction Dot Net.
Humanity survived the war, at the cost of itself in the end. Sera was a shell of its former self and there wasn't anything left to do but rebuild from the ashes. One man wouldn't get to see that so soon; his curiosity leading him to something that was considered a once in a lifetime event, and a series of unfortunate events. Remnant would soon know of his tale through his actions.
This fic contains examples of:
- Adaptational Badass: Vale's military forces are able to take on Locust thanks to the training and aid they received from the Gears, enabling them to fight on somewhat equal footing with the Gears.
- Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Lucas Reed initially displays himself as a childhood friend of Red's who can help Walker and the Gears navigate Mantle ... all so he can dig up dirt on Walker for Atlas.
- Bloodier and Gorier: This shows up in spades thanks to its nature as a crossover with Gears of War, with plenty of graphic violence from the brutal fighting between humanity and the Locust Horde.
- Boring, but Practical: While the Gears lack the pizzazz that Huntsmen and Huntresses have, they make up for that with their excellent teamwork skills and effective tactics, allowing them to supersede the Huntsmen in combat effectiveness when the Locust show up.
- Darker and Edgier: Remnant has never been the nicest of places to live in, but the war against the Locust Horde takes the darker elements of RWBY and cranks them up to eleven.
- Death by Adaptation: Velvet Scarlatina and her family are among those that died during the Siege of Beacon.
- Disappointed in You: Walker has nothing but contempt towards Yatsuhashi for not being there for Velvet after Yatsu got her pregnant and outright states that he's lower than the Locust with his irresponsible actions.
- Evil Counterpart: Scorn's obviously one for Walker: both are Frontline Generals who don't just sit around on their butts loafing around all day, but actually step onto the battlefield with their men to get things done.
- Experienced Protagonist: Walker was already a seasoned Gear before he was transported to Remnant, with his military experience lending itself well to leading the BSS and later the military effort against the Locust Horde on Remnant.
- The Friend Nobody Likes:
- Just about everyone hates the Atlesian Ace Ops because of their callous disregard towards civilians and general arrogance even when it's abundantly clear that Huntsmen like them are absolutely useless against the Locust.
- Ozpin and Ironwood lose a lot of favor from the common people once it's clear that they are absolutely unsuited for leading humanity against the Locust threat, not helped by their attempts to exert their influence even when no one really cares about their agenda.
- Frontline General:
- Walker personally leads Gear operations and never hesitates to step on the battlefield with his men even though he, as the supreme commander of the Gears, would be safer at base.
- Scorn shares that aspect with Walker, showing up in battle to personally marshal his troops into completing the objectives set out for them, no matter the cost.
- Honey Trap: Ozpin sends Pyrrha to spy on Walker's side by having her seduce Jaune, which leaves him devastated after her deception is revealed.
- I'm a Humanitarian:
- During the raid on the Locust base at Red Rock, Walker and his fireteam discover that the base was actually a slaughterhouse where the Locust butchered the humans they managed to capture in combat or lure away from safety.
- A group of Wretches are seen eating away at a human corpse during the Fall of Mantle before they're capped by the Gears.
- Knight of Cerebus: The Locust Horde singlehandedly make the tone of the fic a lot darker than canon with their genocidal hatred against humanity and Faunus along with their utter brutality.
- Rewarded as a Traitor Deserves: After Mantle falls to the Locust Horde, Lucas Reed is immediately arrested and imprisoned by the Obsidian Guard for attempting to sow discord among the Gears by manipulating Blake, Jaune, and Red against Walker with his persuasion Semblance. In addition, Reed is fed just enough to not die, making his well-deserved punishment long and agonizing.
- Trapped in Another World: Walker is taken from his home world of Sera into Remnant with no prospect of ever coming back.
- War Fic: Much of the fic revolves around the Locust invasion of Remnant and mankind's efforts to destroy the Locust invaders under Walker's leadership.
- Worthy Opponent: Uzil Scorn of the Remnant Locust Horde views Walker as one for his unerring determination in combat and lets Walker live after he manages to make Scorn bleed for the first time.
