Over the Rainbow
is a Land of Oz fanfic with an Ozma/Dorothy theme.
The story is an Alternate Universe fic where Dorothy didn't stay in Oz. She decided to go back to Kansas with her family. Years later, Ozma still misses Dorothy. Dorothy herself feels that something is missing in her life, but she can't remember what it is. She doesn't remember much of Oz but assumes it was all just childish fantasies. This is cleared up when she's transported back to Oz and reunited with Ozma.
Over the Rainbow provides examples of:
- Alternate Universe Fic: Dorothy returned to Kansas after The Road to Oz and didn't return to Oz until adulthood.
- '20s Bob Haircut: The story takes place in the 1920s. Ozma recently cut her hair into a bob.
- Boyish Short Hair: Downplayed with Ozma. Her short haircut reminds her of when she was Tip, but Ozma herself is more of a Girly Girl with a Tomboy Streak.
- Dark Fic: Downplayed. There's a lot of angst and the tone is darker than the original books, but it's overall tone is in line with the 1939 film.
- Growing Up Sucks:
- Dorothy's life in Kansas is grey and dull. In contrast to when she was a kid, she's starting to feel Small Town Boredom and feels constrained by her life.
- Downplayed with Ozma. Puberty was awful, but she'd be fine if she had someone her age who she could talk to about things.
- Masturbation Means Sexual Frustration: Puberty meant Ozma's sexuality awakening, however the person she wants is unreachable. This ultimately leads to this, though Ozma's sometimes even too miserable for it.
- Mythology Gag:
- The title comes from "Over The Rainbow" from the MGM adaptation.
- Dorothy's cow Imogene from the 1902 play is referenced.
- One-Steve Limit: Averted. There's Bud Charles and then there's also King Bud.
- The Roaring '20s: The story takes place in the 1920s.
