Fanfic / MIGHT+ U

Go To

Izuku Midoriya, born without a quirk, has pursued his dream of becoming a hero endlessly, always desperate for a chance not just to help others, but to save them! After lying in the hopes of getting Sir Nighteye's attention, he ends up with a chance to prove himself after all. The rest is history. Nighteye's training won't be easy, and Izuku doesn't need it to be. He's going to become a great Quirkless Hero, after all.

Or, the story where Izuku realizes that he's good enough as he is.

MIGHT+ U is a My Hero Academia fanfic written by Rainy__Day (who also wrote Street Fighting Heroes). It can be found on Archive of Our Own here.

MIGHT+ U provides examples of:

  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul:
    • Izuku and Nighteye have a very hostile relationship (from the Hero's part) because Nighteye doesn't believe he is worthy of One for All. Since they meet way before All Might meets the boy, Nighteye becomes a mentor figure to Izuku, seeking to help him become the first Quirkless hero.
    • Since Izuku left Aldera before going to U.A., his "friendship" with Bakugo has been severed, with him finding a new group of friends with Kyoka, Aika and Inasa.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Since the story begins over one year and half before canon, several characters like Sir Nighteye, Ochako Uraraka, Melissa Shield and Kyoka Jiro debut way before their canon appearances.
  • Adaptational Heroism:
    • Gentle and La Brava abandon their life of crime after their encounter with Izuku.
    • Thanks to Izuku and Ochako's intervention, Himiko is saved from villainy before she is too far gone.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: Aizawa is firm believer that a Quirkless hero is impossible, so much that he constantly antagonizes Izuku from the moment the boy arrives at U.A.
  • Adaptational Superpower Change: Instead of fire, Hisashi's Quirk allows him to breath toxic gas, composed of copper sulfate and clorine.
  • Adaptational Villainy:
    • Hisashi Midoriya is one of All for One's allies.
    • The A03 tags spoil that Bakugo will not go to U.A., and eventually become a villain.
    • Ibara Shiozaki becomes Queen Bee's new host.
  • Ascended Extra:
    • Melissa went from being the Arc Hero of single movie to one of the story's main characters.
    • Kyoka Jiro and Inasa Yorashi are some of Izuku's closest friends.
  • Dead Fic: As a result of the author’s growing disinterest in MHA as a whole, the Fic would be cancelled after 31 chapters, only making it to the USJ incident.
  • Epic Fail: After Aika realizes she was the one with Kyoka's pick, that she spent nearly the whole day looking for, the poor girl tries to avoid her friend's wrath by eating the pick while telling her to Look Behind You. Not only this fails, Aika nearly chokes with the pick.
  • For Want Of A Nail:
    • Thanks to his intervention, Izuku convinces Gentle and La Brava from abandoning crime, prevents the Water Hose's death and saves Himiko from becoming a full blown villain, months before getting to U.A.
    • Izuku talks Inasa out of rejecting his U.A. application because of his grudge against Todoroki. This leads not only to Inasa taking the regular Entrance Exam, but also to the wind user stealing most of Bakugo's kills on the site they are located. Without enough points, plus the restrictions added by Nezu, Bakugo fails the exam.
  • Knight Templar Parent: Hisashi may not be around his son's life anymore but he still keeps a track of Izuku, and anyone who mistreats him suffers daring consequences. The teachers from his Sucky School? Killed in a freaky accident while leaving the city. Said Sucky School? Burned to the ground. Students that bullied Izuku? Implied to have being killed by Queen Bee. Bakugo attacks Izuku? Sends one of Queen Bee's bees to take his Quirk, although temporarily. Himiko attacks Izuku? Tries to send a bee to steal her Quirk, but it fails thanks to Dropout.
  • Memetic Mutation: In-Universe example with Izuku. He becomes rarher infamous with his "All-Deavor" video, instantly recognized by most of people who watch it.
  • Only Sane Man: Kyoka fits this role amongst their group of friends, much to her annoyance.
  • Serious Business: Nighteye takes his about All Might very seriously, so much he nearly throttles Izuku when the boy suggests that his "All Might dressed like Nighteye" action figure is fake.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Skewed Priorities: Aika's main concern if she gets arrested for vigilantism is the fact that the prison does not have rice. Inasa ressures her that prison, does indeed serves rice, so she has nothing to worry about.
  • Spared by the Adaptation:
    • Kuin Hachisuka/Queen Bee, as well as Number Six are somehow still alive, and operating alongside the League.
    • Thanks to Izuku's planning and quick thought, the Heroes manage to stop and capture Muscular before he kills the Water Hose duo.
  • Transplant:
    • Ryoya Harushi/Mars, from Rainy_Day's Street Fighting Heroes is age lifted here, being a retired Pro Hero.
    • An inter-authors example. Aika Shizu, from Aliandris' Back to the Beginning is one of Izuku's close friends here.
    • Another inter-author example. Kanzen Kenkaku, a Meta Knight Expy, from Blueiscuteio's Burning Embers is present, being a B-ranked villain instead of an MLA-aligned Hero.
      • Early-Bird Cameo: Kanzen actually appeared here before his first appearance in Burning Embers.
  • Truce Zone: Heat Rush, Harushi's restaurant, is a place where labels of Heroes and Villains don't matter, and anyone cam enjoy the services of the place as long as they respect the rules.
  • Wham Shot: One happens at the end of Chapter 25:
Aizawa and the rest of the class all turn as the 20th student finally arrives. She’s a girl of medium height — roughly the same height as Izuku himself is — with a cute face. Her most striking features though, is her thorn-covered vines-and-flowers hair, with one set being wrapped around her forehead several times and the single white eyepatch over her left eye. She’s flanked by a mob of bees.
  • What the Hell, Costuming Department?: All Might causes an In-Universe example of this with his atrocious outfits, both as himself or on his secret identity. Izuku, being trained by Nighteye can't help but cringe with his idol's horrible fashion sense.
