She planned it for weeks. She tried getting her family's help, but they were too busy with their responsibilities.

It was Mirabel's quinceañera — her 15th birthday where she would be innitiated into womanhood — and nobody came. They all forgot.

Well, except for Antonio.

May I have this dance? is an Encanto fanfic by Sailor (king_mischief) that can be read on Archive of Our Own here.

This fanfic provides examples of:

  • Calling the Old Woman Out: When Alma dismisses the idea of throwing Mirabel a party because she "doesn't deserve" one, Mirabel loses it on her.
Mirabel: I don't DESERVE one? I've been taking care of Antonio since I was 10 years old. I practically raised him because you all are always too busy. I try everyday to help you in any way that I can. I do nothing but help and love this family. I deserved MY night and you all screwed me over. Isabela got her night. Dolores got her night. Luisa got to have her night. EVEN CAMILO GOT HIS OWN PARTY THIS YEAR. I wanted NOTHING more than for you all to be here. I didn't want a big party. God knows who I would even have in my court because I don't have friends my own age if you haven't noticed. I just wanted to have my dance and be with my family as I became a woman and now I'm being told I didn't DESERVE that? You want to know why I don't want a party anymore? Because there's nothing left to do. Antonio changed my shoes and I had my first dance, I made my dress by myself and screw the fucking flowers. I had my quince. You just weren't there.
  • Kick the Dog: Alma claims that Mirabel doesn't deserve a quinceañera not once, but twice. Once when Luisa brought it up, a second time at dinner with the whole family there.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: With the exception of Alma, the entire family experiences this when they realize that they missed Mirabel's quinceañera.
  • One-Person Birthday Party: Since everyone forgot that it was her birthday — her quinceañera no less — Mirabel ends up celebrating by herself in the nursery. That is until Antonio shows up with a gift, this being the only light in an otherwise dark day for her.
  • Pet the Dog: After a rough family dinner, Bruno leaves a birthday gift for Mirabel in the middle of the night.
  • Rage Breaking Point: While Mirabel was sad about everyone forgetting her birthday, she was willing to shrug it all off when the family offers to throw her a late party. That is until Alma adds that she doesn't "deserve" a party, at which point she unloads onto her.
  • What Have You Done for Me Lately?: Alma seems to think that, because Mirabel doesn't have a gift and therefore has no clear purpose, that she doesn't have any responsibilities and therefore doesn't "deserve" a quinceañera like Dolores and her sisters. Mirabel, sick of her shit, points out that she has no right to make such claims.
