* GoodIsNotNice:
** Tom fulfills this role quite well. While he is bent on saving as many people as possible, he does manipulate a lot of the local youths into prepping to become frontline soldiers, deliberately commits fraud by overspending on survival needs (and counting on the EMP and apocalypse to erase said debt), and killed Shido before Z-Day happened.
** The Thegns are fighting for the sake of humanity and are firmly on Tom's side. Even the ones on the far side of the river, who have less contact with Tom, will respectfully refer to him as "My Jarl." That said, the Thegns are, one and all, former street gangs whose affiliation with the law is best described as "Sketchy." Tom is more than capable of smacking them into line if necessary, as he proves with Eric the Red.

* LoopholeAbuse: Tom gives some guidelines for the gangs that want to learn how to fight. Don't take up arms against the innocent, don't sell drugs, you can't bring all of your boys to practice, and the gang leads come after school on Saturday. However, since the gangs have had previous history, they figure out two ways around these guidelines: the first being to perform their violence on ''each other'', using the Holmgang to have "honorable duels" or "Setpiece Battles." The other way, which terrifies Tom, is that they decide to target other, non-affiliated gangs to rob. This is referred to as going "a-viking," and involves beating up individual gang members or attacking and looting clubhouses for non-involved gangs.

* MercyKill: Several of the Thegns complain about having had to do this to some of their members once the dead start to rise.

* RightForTheWrongReasons: Takagi (the elder) has this view of Tom. While it ''is'' a good thing in his mind that Tom has awoken the martial spirit of the nation's youth, he was hoping that if there was an awakening of the martial spirit, said spirit would be that of 1930s-1940s Japan, and not that of ''medieval vikings.''

** When a stoner proposes to Takagi that they grab his cousin's weed-growing operation, Takagi barely keeps his temper under control... before his wife points out that it'd actually be a good idea- though not for reasons of getting high, but because Hemp is a very valuable plant capable of being turned into lots of commodities.

* SparedByTheAdaptation: Too many to list or count. Most of the starting high school survives thanks to Tom, not to mention a Christian School, ''lots'' of youth gangs, and more. As Tom later recounts, the total survivors of the initial starting school would be between six and ten people. One of the problems he's having is finding enough vehicles to transport all the civilians to the hideaway in the mountains- and the number is closing in on ''two thousand.''

** RageBreakingPoint: Tom had butted heads with Shido before (least of which is because many of the Huscarls were the victims of Shido's Track Club members). The final straw came when [[spoiler:Shido blocked his idea for a festival between his "reenactment club" and the various martial arts clubs (that would have coincidentally put their family, friends, and others safely inside the school grounds on Z-Day)]].

This or these examples of Surprisingly Realistic Outcome seem to violate at least one of these rules, which disqualifies them: No character reactions (characters get angry, don't forgive, don't change their personality instantly, etc.); Too fantastical (depends on the properties of magic, powers, sci-fi tech, monsters, etc.); Not surprising (a character was warned about the outcome, it's used to provide Karma or An Aesop, or it simply follows normal conventions for this genre or medium); Plot happens (the example only describes an event, but not why audiences would expect a different, unrealistic outcome); Not an outcome (a character just explains why something wouldn't work as expected); More of a Deconstruction (the event has major, lasting effects on the plot, make something more realistic, but not completely realistic, or a parody/fanwork applies realistic consequences to the events of a different work); or fits better under a different trope. See the trope's definition for more details. If you believe a removal was a mistake, please bring it up in the cleanup thread.

* SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome:
** Tom takes special care to stock up on ''multiple'' species of potatoes for his future farms, since his mother's side of the family were refugees from the Irish Famine, and the need for genetically diverse crops has been "Burned into his DNA."
** Shido is an absolute bastard. Tom knows exactly how more of a bastard the man would have become in the zombie apocalypse and how many would have died because of him. So killing him to prevent all of that should be easy right? Wrong. Despite knowing he did what was absolutely necessary for everybody's survival Tom can't just casually shake off the fact he intentionally murdered another human being. He even confesses as much to Shizuka who has to help him deal with the resulting negative emotions.
** One problem with the makeshift refugee camp at the Self-Storage park is getting new vehicles. Not, it is clear, that there are trucks and mass transit vehicles that cannot be taken, for this is the Zombie Apocalypse, and the abandoned vehicles are many. Not that there aren't people who can steal the cars and hotwire the engines, for a large chunk of the population of the camp is made of delinquents and gangsters. The simple fact is: there aren't enough people there who know how to drive stick shift.
** In the apocalypse, what's the difference in a self-storage park between your garage and anyone else's garage? Answer: Bolt Cutters.
** As much as Tom might want to teach everyone who comes to him, he knows that having every gang in the area descend on his school is not only infeasible, but would draw attention. Therefore he lays down three rules about attending the practice: you can't skip school to come, only the leaders can attend (and can pass it on to their gangs if they wish), and it has to be on the half-day on Saturday.
