He Never Told You

Grace finds her way back to the cat's chalet car. They have a conversation.
This fanfic contains examples of:
- Aesop Amnesia: Justified. During Grace's final fight with Simon, she acknowledges he's in pain, but tells him she's not responsible for his problems. After his death when she meets up with The Cat, The Cat tells Grace she does not owe him anything, only for Grace to fire back that she owes him everything. Since Simon was her best friend, it's understandable she blames herself for his death in spite of everything that happened between them.
- Even Evil Can Be Loved: In spite of Simon murdering Tuba, mistreating Hazel, becoming insane and trying to kill Grace, and even still trying to kill her after she saved his life, Grace was still horrified and heartbroken by his death. The reason Grace seeks out The Cat to talk with her was because she is the only other person on the train that would care about his death.
- Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: Grace blames herself for Simon's death because she was the one that told him the lie that numbers increasing mean strength. The Cat points out that they both believed that lie and that got them into trouble. When they learned the truth Grace dealt with it and Simon didn't.
- In Spite of a Nail: Discussed. Grace wonders if Simon would still be alive if he hadn't gotten on the train. The Cat points out that if Simon hadn't gotten on the train, there's no guarantee he'd have been any better off, due to how stubborn he was.
- Pet the Dog: The Cat and Grace do not have a good relationship. In spite of this, when Grace comes to The Cat after Simon's death, she does the best she can to comfort Grace, assuring her that Simon's death was not her fault.
