Fanfic / Gingema's Revenge

Go To

Gingema's Revenge is a Tales of the Magic Land fanfic written in Russian by Ellada. Some time after the events of the series, all the magic in the Magic Land vanishes in an instant, and Stella learns that the catastrophe was caused by a witch whom everyone thought long dead — Gingema.

Tropes present in the fanfic:

  • Adaptational Villainy: The fanfic manages to make Omnicidal Maniac Gingema worse than she was in canon. It turns out she has also planned to steal all the world's magic for herself, and even now that she can't actually use magic, she is happy with all the suffering she has caused. Moreover, she plans to watch Stella die a slow, tortuous death of hunger and thirst – while canon Gingema had a sadistic streak, she never indulged it to that extent.
  • Ascended Extra: Stella only made a brief on-page appearance in the books and is little more than a plot device there. She is the main character in this fanfic.
  • Best Served Cold: Who would have thought Gingema could do any harm when everyone was sure she had been dead for about two decades?
  • Brought Down to Normal: As the magic disappears overnight, Stella loses her powers and become a human woman. It's reversed by the end, though the author has admitted it would have been an interesting character arc if Stella had stayed human forever.
  • CPR: Clean, Pretty, Reliable: Even though Urfin has zero medical training and, given his solitary lifestyle, has probably never provided any medical help to any human besides himself, he is able to revive Stella with CPR (which, of course, has heavy Kiss of Life undertones because he is attracted to her). It might be justified by the fact her magic powers are back at that point and may be helping her even when she is unconscious.
  • Formerly Sapient Species: The talking animals all lose their sapience when the magic vanishes. They get it back in the end.
  • Insecure Love Interest: Urfin and Stella, especially the former, are this to each other for weeks, since they are afraid they are so different their relationship wouldn't work out.
  • Mundane Solution: Gingema is defeated with a simple carving knife.
  • My Own Private "I Do": The Rose Land's Festival of Love is designed to invoke the trope. If a man gives a woman a present during the festival and she accepts it and kisses him, they are considered legally married.
  • Near-Villain Victory: Gingema's plan briefly succeeds, with the Magic Land losing its magic.
  • Queen Incognito: Stella, hidden behind a mask, regularly attends the celebrations of the Rose Land's Festival of Love. However, up until the fanfic's events, she never accepted anyone's love herself.
  • Rescue Romance: Urfin Jus and Stella fall in love after she saves him and the entirety of the Magic Land from the chaos caused by Gingema and he saves her from drowning and then from a fever.
  • Scars Are Forever: Stella has a small scar left after the entire ordeal, deliberately invoking the trope to remind herself to never underestimate her enemies again. It later helps Urfin recognize her at the masquerade in the Rose Land.
  • Taking You with Me: Gingema gloats that even if Stella manages to kill her, she would die herself under the water's pressure. Stella bites back that she is quite ready for the plan.
