Fanfic / Game of Thrones: Vendetta

Go To

The Northern rebellion has been crushed in what is now known as the Red Wedding. The King in the North, his pregnant wife and his mother have been slain.

Then, there is Lucian Maegyr.

A Volantene nobleman/warlord, Lucian is commander of the Black Tigers, a sellsword organization whose strength is greater than that of the famed Golden Company. And word reaches him of his daughter's death.

So begins Game of Thrones: Vendetta by Snafu the Great, which details an alternative outcome to the War of Five Kings in which House Maegyr and the remnants of House Targaryen invade Westeros with a single purpose: to annihilate House Lannister and their allies.

Game of Thrones: Vendetta provides examples of:

  • Accomplice by Inaction: How Lucian justifies executing the Freys friendly to the Starks - they could've warned them about the Red Wedding, but they didn't.
  • Adaptational Heroism: Tyrion discovers the lannicest in a letter left by Jaime instead of already knowing about it.
  • Adaptational Villainy: Roslin was in on the Red Wedding.
  • As the Good Book Says...:
    • Ezekiel 25:17 is the quote used in the second chapter. As one reviewer states, "you can never go wrong with the holy word of God."
    • The third chapter opens with Revelations 6:8
    • The fourth chapter opens up with Psalms 137: 1, 7-9, as quoted by Joshua Graham
  • Awaken the Sleeping Giant: Talisa's death is what kicks off the Roaring Rampage of Revenge. As Bronn puts it following the declaration of vendetta against the Lannisters:
Bronn: The proof is right there. He destroyed House Frey and killed the Spicers. Not only is he going to wipe out Roose Bolton, but he will put your entire family to the sword...the Kingslayer, the Queen Regent...the boy King...everyone. He will do what Robb Stark failed to do: see whether or not you can shit gold.
  • Awful Truth: Tywin discovers that his war against the Starks was All for Nothing after overhearing Cersei and Tyrion regarding her children and the Twincest with Jaime.
  • Badass Creed: "A Lannister always pays their debts, but the House of Maegyr invented vendetta."
  • Badass Family: House Maegyr and also, House Targaryen.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: The reason Sansa requests Tyrion to be spared.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Roslin is executed just as Talisa was: stabbed in the stomach while pregnant.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Pretty much any engagement between the Black Tigers and their enemies can be called one.
  • Death by Adaptation: Jon Connington, Yara Greyjoy, Roslin Frey, and Brienne of Tarth.
  • Explain Explain... Mass "Oh, Crap!": Lucian Maegyr does the former while describing Talisa's death, and Walder and House Frey does the latter when they realize that the man in question is her father.
  • False Flag Operation: Lucian attacks the Iron Islands, killing Balon's brothers and daughter, and frames the Lannisters for it, tricking Balon into attacking Lannisport and Casterly Rock.
  • Fantastic Nuke: House Targaryen's dragons.
  • Forced to Watch: Walder Frey is forced to watch as his kin are executed by the Black Tigers.
  • Frontline General: Lucian Maegyr. As a result, the Black Tigers will follow him anywhere.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: House Karstark (who abandoned Robb Stark after he executed Lord Karstark), betrays Roose Bolton and surrenders Winterfell to the Black Tigers.
  • Lady of War: Rhaenys Targaryen can get down and dirty on the battlefield.
  • Last of Their Kind: Tyrion Lannister is the Sole Survivor of the Lannisters.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: The Lannisters and their allies are on the receiving end of it.
  • Nasty Party: The Red Nameday.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Tyrion can't help but to gloat to Tywin that he just pissed off Lucian Maegyr by having his daughter killed.
  • Nom de Mom: While Jon Snow is given the full rights to use the name of his father (Targaryen) upon being legitimized he sticks to the name of his mother (Stark}.
  • Pater Familicide: After realizing he would never be King, Stannis murdered his wife and daughter (as well as Melisandre) in a blind rage.
  • Plot-Triggering Death: Talisa Stark's murder wound up drawing the Black Tigers into the war.
  • Revenge Fic: The Black Tigers, Starks, and Targaryens go on a Roaring Rampage of Revenge against everyone who wrongs them.
  • Significant Reference Date: The Black Tigers were planning on attacking 300 years after Aegon's Conquest. However, Talisa's murder forced their hand.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Rhaenys, Lady, and Shae
  • Would Hurt a Child: Not even Cersei's children are spared from Lucian's wrath.
