Official summary: Himiko Toga's parents never truly understood her, driving her to the breaking point. Fortunately, Izuku Midoriya truly understood what it meant to be a hero, and offered her his hand. A chance encounter, leading to so much more as the pair discovered family was more than the blood they shared.

Family Beyond Blood is a My Hero Academia fanfic written by Aliandris. A rewrite of a previous fic, A Different Course, the fic tells the story of Himiko Toga being adopted by Inko Midoriya, becoming Izuku's sister and attending U.A. a year before he does.

Family Beyond Blood provides examples of:

  • Adaptational Early Appearance:
    • Himiko Toga appears in the first chapter, a year and a half before the start of canon events, being found by Izuku and Inko, and later adopted into their family.
    • In order to help Himiko with her Quirk, Izuku suggests calling in Vlad King, whose Quirk is also blood-based, leading to the Blood Hero becoming a mentor to Himiko.
    • Principal Nezu is called in to assist Vlad and Inko with Himiko's case.
    • Though she doesn't make a physical appearance until Izuku starts at U.A., Tsuyu Asui becomes a regular contact for Izuku after Himiko is adopted by Inko, talking with him through a support forum for those dealing with Quirk discrimination, giving him advice on how to help Himiko.
  • Adaptational Heroism: Instead of being a villain, Himiko enrolls in U.A. a year before Izuku to become a hero.
  • Adaptational Karma: After hitting Izuku with an explosion from his gauntlet meant for Ochako, Bakugo is informed by All Might and Aizawa that he is banned from using his gauntlets and is deemed too irresponsible to use them. In addition, he's enrolled into a Support Course class so he can understand the proper usage of said items.
  • Ascended Extra: Kashiko Sekigai, a student of Isami High School from the second OVA, takes Mineta's place in Class 1-A, having applied to UA after being inspired by the performances of Himiko and Class 1-B at the Sports Festival the previous year.
    • Vlad King has more of a presence in the story, being called in to help with Himiko's issues concerning her Quirk. After Himiko enrolls in UA, he's her homeroom teacher for the first year, and continues being a mentor for her outside of class.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: Izuku as always. It takes only a few seconds upon meeting Himiko to realize that she has a Quirk that's blood-based, taking note of all the blood on her despite not appearing to be injured, as well as her fangs and her muttering for blood under her breath. Said analysis prompts him to suggest calling in Vlad King, since he has a blood-based Quirk himself.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Played straight and inverted as Izuku and Himiko, the latter being a year older than the former, are protective of each other and look out for their safety.
  • Happily Adopted: After taking in Himiko and giving her a home for several months, Inko officially adopts Himiko as her daughter at the start of the new year.
  • Point of Divergence:
    • The biggest one comes at the start of the story when Himiko is found by Izuku and Inko, who take her in, giving her a chance to become a hero with her Quirk.
    • Due to Himiko realizing that he may be dealing with being bullied, Izuku admits about Bakugo's treatment of him, prompting Inko to call Aldera's staff and have Izuku be moved into a different class, limiting his contact with Bakugo.
  • Related Differently in the Adaptation: In canon, Himiko is a member of the League of Villains while Izuku is a hero-in-training at UA. She also has a crush on him, but he doesn't return the feelings. Here, Himiko and Izuku become siblings after Inko adopts Himiko, resulting in a far more positive relationship between the two.
  • Shipper on Deck: After seeing the interactions between Izuku and Ochako, Himiko is on board for seeing them as a couple.
  • Taking the Bullet: During Combat Trials, Bakugo attempts to hit Ochako with an explosion from his gauntlets. Izuku pushes her out of the way in time, being sent flying out of the building as a result.
