In Ancestral
, Danny is descended from the royal family of a chain of islands called Avlynys on his mother's side. When several of his family members suddenly die, the family journeys to the kingdom for the first time since Danny became half-ghost... and then it starts to get complicated.
Ancestral contains examples of:
- Dead Person Impersonation: A malicious ghost impersonates Danny's murdered cousin Vivian and tries to attack the royal family.
- I See Dead People: The Avlynys islands are full of ghosts that cannot be seen by normal people, though Danny can see them fine.
- Locked Out of the Loop: Despite his long friendship with Jack and Maddie, Vlad had no idea that she was royalty until he saw a picture of a younger her and Alicia in the paper.
- Modest Royalty: In this universe Maddie's family is royalty, being the ruling family of a group of islands in the North Atlantic called Avlynys. Both Maddie and Alicia have little-to-nothing to do with the running of said country, and have actually been out of the public eye as royalty for so long that they're all but considered missing to those not in the know.
- Poor Communication Kills: The ghosts on a cannot speak to Danny, so he's unable to get much information from them on what's going on.
- Rebellious Princess: Maddie and Alicia, while still staying in touch with their family, have had little-to-nothing to do with running the country and stayed under the radar, to the point that the general public openly speculated that they were dead. Maddie's even suggested transitioning to a democracy at least once.
