A Nondescript Holiday Carol
is a 2021 RWBY fanfiction written by Sum Dum Nerd/NerdWithAKeyboard.
A RWBY retelling of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, the story takes place in the wintertime at Beacon Academy, where all the students and teachers are preparing to celebrate the Holiday. That is, except for Weiss Schnee of Team RWBY, who is bitter and cold towards the Holiday and her peers. Only through visits from supernatural representations of the Holiday Past, Present, and Yet To Come can she possibly realize the importance of kindness and Holiday cheer.
A Nondescript Holiday Carol contains examples of the following tropes:
- Creepy Child: The Ghost of Holiday Present reveals two disturbing children under her robes: Ignorance and Want.
- Death by Adaptation: Nicholas Schnee, Weiss' maternal grandfather, is generally believed to be deceased in canon* , though it has yet to be confirmed. In this story, Nicholas Schnee is confirmed dead. In fact, it's the first line of the story.
- Gender Flip: With A Christmas Carol. In the original novella, the Ghosts are depicted as male or potentially genderless. In this story, the Ghosts are all explicitly described as female, as well as resembling Weiss' team members.
- Original Flavor: The fic attempts to remain as close as possible with the tone of early RWBY.
- The fic also borrows the "Nondescript Holiday" from RWBY Chibi.
- Pseudo-Canonical Fic: The fic is intended to work in tandum with the canon of the main series RWBY, taking place between Volumes 1 and 2, referencing events from the former in the story.
- You Mean "Xmas": As with the "Nondescript Winter Holiday" explored in RWBY Chibi, the Holiday is a stand-in for Christmas in pretty much every aspect but name, with trees, presents, wreaths, lights, and taking place in wintertime.
